This project encourages students to delve into the nature of myths, particularly focusing on Greek mythology and its influence on Christianity. Students will explore the birth of Athena to understand how myths explain complex concepts. They will create Venn diagrams to compare and contrast Greek mythology with Christian beliefs, highlighting similarities such as themes of creation and morality. By summarizing findings and reflecting on geographical influences on ancient economies, students will assess the interconnectedness of mythology and religion in shaping cultural narratives.
E N D
Do Now • Think about something you find hard to explain…. Now create a short myth to explain it.
What is a Myth??? • 1. a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, especially one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature. • 2. stories or matter of this kind: realm of myth. • 3. any invented story, idea, or concept: His account of the event is pure myth. • 4. an imaginary or fictitious thing or person. • 5. an unproved or falsecollectivebelief that is used to justify a socialinstitution.
Just like in Mesopotamia religion was meant to explain things in life that didn’t seem to have an explanation. Think Pair Share Think about the story of Athena’s birth (re-read if you have to). What might that story explain??
Pop Quiz--- Again thinking about the story of Athena… why do you think the scientific name for a spider is Arachnid??????
Influence on Christianity After reading the handout create a Venn Diagram for the similarities and differences of Greek Mythology and Christianity. As well as summarize them in a paragraph.
