  2. What is Identity Theft? “Identity theft occurs when someone possesses or uses your name, address, Social Security number, bank or credit card number, or other identifying information without your knowledge with the intent to commit fraud or other crimes.” -Federal Trade Commission

Offenders and Methods • 50% of cases involve an organization’s employee • A purchase in a store, over the phone or online • Information stolen in your home by a relative, friend and in-home employee • “Shoulder surfing” at an ATM or a store • Data breach from a organization • A lost or stolen wallet, checkbook or credit card • Emails, calls or texts pretending to be a trusted source

Some Things You Can Do • PRAY • Use a locked mailbox • Shred sensitive documents • Ask why they need your personal data • Don’t let your credit/bank card out of your sight • Use complicated passwords and PIN numbers • Learn about identity protection services • Monitor your accounts regularly-online is best
