Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries • Increasing oil transports in our northern waters are • New Vessel Traffic Central • North and South - around 50.000 ship movements each year • Preventive efforts are without doubt producing results • Preparedness and available equipment - important part of the security concept and must keep a high standard Murmansk US Rotterdam

Preventive measures • Places for refuge and areas for beaching have been mapped • Territorial waters are expanded from 4 nm til 12 nm • Mandatory traffic lanes are established in Northern Waters • ”Routeing” is beeing considered outside the territorial waters • VTS – 4 are established, one is planned to be in operation from 2007 • Automatic Identification System will be in operation for the whole coastline in 2004

Cooperation with Russia and the U.S. • Cooperation with the Russian Ministry of Transport • Cooperation includes safety at sea as well as oil spill preparedness • Sharing information and AIS-data • Goal to establish a broader cooperation: Barents VTMIS • Joint exercises • Analyses of Russian oil types • Other issues within oil spill preparedness U.S. – Russia workshop at Interspill • Part of the U.S. - Russia Energy Dialogue. • Norwegian government are pleased to host the workshop
