  21. Concrete Detail with Quotes • Never simply drop a quote into a paragraph: “The man is guilty due to the fact that the police found the knife in his car” (Johnson).

  26. Paraphrasing • Definition: • Restate what the author says in your own words. • No quotation marks are necessary • You must still cite the source

  30. In Text Citations • In-Text Citations tell the reader where you got the information. • It gives the author credit! • If you came up with a good idea, wouldn’t you want people to know it was yours?

  31. In-Text Citations With Quotes • Find the author’s last name Johnson • Put the last name in parentheses (Johnson) • Put it behind the quote “this is an example quote” (Johnson) • Put the period after the parentheses “this is an example quote” (Johnson).

  32. What’s wrong with these quotes? • “this is an example quote.” (Johnson) • Why? • Period is in the wrong place • “this is an example quote (Johnson).” • Why? • Quotation mark is in the wrong place

  33. In-Text Citations for Paraphrasing • Find the author’s last name Johnson • Put the last name in parentheses (Johnson) • Put the period after the parentheses This is an example paraphrase (Johnson).

Example commentary: • There is no other reason that man should have had a knife in his car. • If he did have a reason about why the knife was in his car, he should have explained it to the jury.
