  4. National Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 to October 15--Recognition of the contributions of Hispanic and Latin Americans to the heritage and culture of the United States--

  5. Originally from Puerto Rico, Roberto Clemente Walker came to the United States to play major league baseball in 1954. • He spent his career as a right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates. • Although he was an elite athlete, achieving over 3,000 base hits by the end of his career, Clemente faced racial bias in the United States. • This led Clemente to become an advocate for Latino and Black players’ rights in baseball. • He died in a plane crash in 1972, enroute to bring relief to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua. • He believed in a life of serving others. “Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on Earth.” https://www.rd.com/culture/hispanic-americans-who-made-history/ Roberto Clemente Walker

  6. Science Club/Drone ClubCome Fly with Us! Are you interested in learning to fly drones? Science Club will meet every Tuesday from 3:45 - 5:15. The first 30 minutes of this club will be dedicated to snack and homework help time. This club will focus on fun science experiments and learning to fly drones. The drone curriculum includes basic flight terminology, drone piloting, and a set of prescribed flight challenges. All grade levels welcome! Student applications will be chosen randomly, and a wait list will be compiled from the remaining applicants.

  8. Like seafood? Take your family to Junior’s Seafood Tuesday, October 8th. • Bring your school ID with you, and YMS will earn 10% of the proceeds that evening. • It runs from 4 PM until 9 PM. • It works for both dine-in and take-out!

  9. Let’s Make Some Money!!! It’s our Fall Fundraiser. The funds from this fundraiser will help with Teacher Appreciation Week, Student Appreciation Day, and much more. Our goal is $6,000.  We Can Do It! If everyone sells something, we can make this goal!

  11. White Cane Safety Day White Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United States, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The white cane is a symbol of blindness, but also a tool of independence. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired.

  13. Homecoming 2019-20 • Tuesday, October 15 – Homecoming game against Hilliard • Tuesday, October 15 –Pep Rally • Friday, October 18-- 6 – 8 PM Homecoming Dance Pre-sale tickets ONLY-$5 Week of Oct. 9-17 8:30-9:00 AM No tickets will be sold at the door.

  14. Start getting your costumes ready:Spirit/Dress-Up Days • Tuesday, October 15th – NEON DAY • Wednesday, October 16th – MEME DAY • Thursday, October 17th – TACKY TOURIST DAY • Friday, October 18th – CLASS COLORS DAY (6th Gold, 7th Green, 8th Black) Students must adhere to dress code!

  15. YMS Tabletop Gaming Club • Do you like to play games? Join the Gaming Club! • Meet every Thursday in room 831 right after school until 5 PM. • Make sure you have a ride home! Get a form from Mr. Sernaker.

  16. Quidditch—Muggles Welcome! • YMS Quidditch Club meets every Tuesday. • Pick up a sports packet in the main office. Get that completed ASAP! • Meet in room 204 in the media center right after school. Come “S.O.A.R.” with us!

  18. YMS Football Rocks! • Next game—at home against FBMS • Wednesday—October 8 • Plunder those Pirates, Hornets!

  19. Lady Hornets are a FORCE! • Varsity Hornets won the County Championship last night versus Hilliard in a great 3-game match. • They won the last game 15-13 in a highly entertaining championship game. • Both JV and Varsity Teams record was 12-3 on the year. Great job ladies!!! Way to represent YMS! You made us proud!

  21. This is Suicide Prevention Month, but…YMS will focus on this ALL YEAR! Be a part of the solution. Read the poster in the cafeteria for ideas on how you can help!
