  1. Our Mission: To Promote and Enhance the Creation, Performance, and Appreciation of the Arts in Region 7W BENTON, SHERBURNE, STEARNS, and WRIGHT Counties www.centralmnartsboard.org

  2. Applying for Awards Emerging Artist *Artist statement *Work samples Established Artist *Artist statement *Work samples *Evidence of contributions to the local arts community *Artistic accomplishments

  3. Writing your Grant Application • Essential parts • Artistic Merit/Quality • Artist Statement • Work Samples • Goals and Outcomes • Measurement/Evaluation • Demonstrating Need/Ability • Budget • Draft Review

  4. Artist Statement • Who you are, why you do what you do • Talk about yourself, not other artists • Mention your medium, genre, your chosen subjects/themes • Be concise • under ½ page is best

  5. Work Samples • This is the ONLY impression the Board or Review panel will have of your work • Be sure your files are readable • Invest in acquiring high-quality samples

  6. Goals and Outcomes • Know the difference • Goals- establish specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-targeted objectives. • A goal can be long-term or short-term. • Outcomes- the end result

  7. Alignment • Does your proposal align with your goals and interests as an artist? • Does it align with the mission of your funder?

  8. SMART Goals model • S- Specific • M- Measureable • A- Achievable • R- Realistic • T-Time-bound

  9. Examples of Goals • To be proficient in throwing off the hump for at least four different forms by the end of three months. • Students will experience the creative process and exhibit a creative approach to problem-solving. • Shed some of the technical difficulties of playing the instrument that come with not being in a regular practice and performance routine • Take fourteen private lessons with the Associate Principal Oboist of the Minnesota Orchestra between May 2012 and January 2013

  10. Goal Measurement • Match your evaluation methods with your goals Methods of Evaluation: • Recording or photographing rehearsals, tracking hours spent writing or painting, formal or informal critiques from mentors and other artists • Two basic forms of Assessment • Qualitative • Results of skills learned, improved confidence • Quantitative • Things that can be counted: number of paintings, performances

  11. Examples of Outcomes • I have grown as an artist and now give more polished, meaningful performances • I know a method of bookbinding more traditional than those with which I was familiar • Ifeel a stronger connection with artists outside my chosen genre or medium. • I have the technical skills to weave saplings to create an environmental art work as stable as a building and fluid as a drawing.

  12. Demonstrating Need • State need in terms of resources, not finances • Time is the primary element I am lacking in my studio practice. • I am only able to fire 15 cubic feet of work at a time, this capacity limits my production abilities • I have strong technical painting abilities, but my knowledge of color theory is weak

  13. Budgeting • Check your math • Be sure numbers are consistent throughout the application • Show the method of calculation • Check guidelines for expenses that are/are not eligible • Call or email with questions

  14. Awarding Funds • Applicants with the highest rankings are awarded until funds are exhausted for that grant round. • CMAB directors make the final decisions • An applicant must score at least a 3.0 in order to be considered for funding
