  1. Global Warming Discuss: • “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” American Indian Proverb

  2. What is Global Warming? • What causes it? • What will be the affect of Climate Change? • A rise of 2˚could put our tomorrow on the line. The heat is on!One of the biggest challenges facing the Global Community is climate change, also known as ‘Global Warming.’

  3. Global Warming does not just mean warmer days, it also results in extreme weather events. Can you think of some extreme weather events that have occurred recently?

  4. droughts… floods…. heatwaves…?

  5. Around 10% of New Zealand’s greenhouse gases come from energy production. Our Carbon Emissions have increased 20% since 1990. What has caused this and what can we do to reduce it?

  6. What will happen if our planet warms up? 1˚C • Hurricanes, Ice caps melting, droughts • 1000s of plants & animals face extinction, heat waves, droughts, regular extreme floods • Searing temperatures devastate Amazon. Declining food production=famine, water shortages, up to half animal & plant species extinct. • Arctic has vanished. Sea levels rise 1m every 20yrs, devastating coastlines. Starvation • Large areas of coast flooded, rainforests gone, rivers dried up, deserts expand, population diminished. • Scorching heatwaves, stupendous hurricanes & floods regular, struggle to survive. 2˚C 3 ˚C 4 ˚C 5 ˚C 6 ˚C

  7. Did you know…? • The global warming trend over the last 50 years (0.13˚C per decade) is nearly twice as much as that of the last hundred years? In 2005 alone, the Arctic lost an area of ice the size of Afghanistan.

  8. Investigate one of the following • in relation to global warming: • Arctic Melting • Death of the Amazon • Carbon Soils • Great Barrier Reef • Ocean acidification

  9. What happened in Kenya in 2004, 2006 and 2009 during an extended period of drought? A state of emergency was declared and millions faced malnutrition and even starvation.
