  1. ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP

  2. “ ‘People are always asking me why,’ said Rev. Frank Perkovich. ‘Why bring this beer hall music into church? I say, What is church music anyway? It’s anything that raises your heart to God.’ ” (Stars and Stripes, 10/23/93)

  3. “A prisoner is suing in federal court for what he says is his First Amendment freedom to worship in the nude.” (Stars and Stripes, 8/8/92)

  4. Church services that welcome pets • “Rover, of course, needs his run in the park. But what about his spiritual needs? • “All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale wants to meet those needs -- and those of his owner. • “The church just started monthly services for pets and their loved ones, even providing doggie treats for Rover at communion time. • “...‘If they start getting boisterous’ -- as in barking or hissing -- ‘don't worry,’ (“Rev.” Roger, sw) Allee reassures about 50 church- goers at the most recent pet service. ‘They're praising God as only they know how to do it.’” (by Donna Gehrke-White, Sat, Aug. 09, 2003, Miami Herald, http://www.miami.com/ mld/miamiherald/living/6485657.htm)

  5. ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP I. “WORSHIP” – WHAT IS IT? “To make obeisance, do reverence to…act of homage or reverence” (Vine, p. 235) “To adore or pay divine honors to as deity; to reverence with supreme respect and veneration, as, to worship God” (Webster’s New Universal Unabridged Dictionary, p. 2109)

  6. ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP I. “WORSHIP” – WHAT IS IT? II. OBJECT OF WORSHIP – “GOD,” Rom. 1:25; Lk. 4:8; Rev. 22:8-9; Ps. 14:2; Gen. 6:5; Rom. 1:17; 10:17 III. MANNER OF WORSHIP – “IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH” (Jn. 4:23-24) A. Is it important how we worship God?Rom. 15:4; Gen. 4:1-5; Heb. 11:4; Lev. 10:1-2; 2 Chron. 26:16-20; Ex. 30:7-8; Matt. 4:10 B. 10. "So, to re-emphasize the point, it would NOT be a sin or unscriptural to have `meat and potatoes', `pie or ice cream', or any other healthful, helpful food `on the table' as an aid in our worship, providing that our spiritual purpose was to meet HIM there, and to thankfully remember Him for His death and ALL that He means to us, physically as well as spiritually." (Francis J. Winder, Music of the Saints, p. 123, all capitals his, emph mine, sw)

  11. “It is with great sadness that this article MUST be written. Tuesday night, October 5, 1999, the… Highland Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas publicly proclaimed its ecumenical ties. In the Saturday, October 2, 1999 religious section of the Abilene Reporter News this…congregation, announced that the ‘Walk to Emmaus’ video would be shown, and that ‘the remainder of the meeting will include singing, preaching, and Communion.’ Yes, you read it correctly. • “WHAT WAS SEEN AND HEARD • …There was a full blown band on stage. There was an all woman quartet entertaining the audience. Added to this • there was hand clapping, and hands raised in the air with arms, and bodies swaying back and forth. Some may say that this was not the formal worship assembly, and that

  12. we should not make a big deal about it. But remember, they were treating it as such when they offered, and partook[erroneously]of the communion… “The sad story of October 5, 1999 at Highland does not end with the above. The speaker at this event was Eddie Sharp of the University Church of Christ here in town. First, he read from a book supplied for this "Walk to Emmaus," and then the audience would then respond from the book. This sounds exactly like Catholic and denominational liturgical nonsense. What was the gist of the rest of his speech to these Emmaus walkers? Church and religious heritage and tradition does not matter. In essence, you can be a member of a denomination, and that is acceptable in God's eyes. Just let Jesus lead you to a church that is right for you… “Let's not forget that they partook of the commun-

  13. ion. Listen to this. The communion was administered by Eddie Sharp, and another man. Mr. Sharp would break the bread, and give it to the participant who would go to the next man, and there dip it into a large cup of the fruit of the vine, and then partake of the soaked bread. That is Catholicism through and through! Friends, my Bible still says that the early church met and partook of the Lord's Supper on the first day of the week (Acts 20:1-7) not Tuesday… (“Walk to Emmaus, Tuesday Night Communion, and Other Matters,” by Royce Williamson from The Communicator, Vol. 6, No. 41, October 10, 1999, bulletin of the N. 5th and Grape St. Church of Christ, Abilene, Texas 79601)

  14. ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP I. “WORSHIP” – WHAT IS IT? II. OBJECT OF WORSHIP – “GOD,” Rom. 1:25; Lk. 4:8; Rev. 22:8-9; Ps. 14:2; Gen. 6:5; Rom. 1:17; 10:17 III. MANNER OF WORSHIP – “IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH” (Jn. 4:23-24) A. Is it important how we worship God?Rom. 15:4; Gen. 4:1-5; Heb. 11:4; Lev. 10:1-2; 2 Chron. 26:16-20; Ex. 30:7-8; Matt. 4:10 B. Worship “in truth,” 2 Jn. 9; Matt. 15:9 C. Worship “in spirit”

  15. Worshipping from the heart – “in spirit” 1. “Singing with grace in your hearts unto God” (Col. 3:16); “Singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord” (Eph. 5:19) 2. “This do in remembrance of me” (1 Cor. 11:24) 3. Prayer: Contrast in Matt. 6:7-15 4. “Speaking the truthin love” (Matt. 15:9; Eph. 4:15); must listen properly (Matt. 13:13-15) 5. Giving: “not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver” (2 Cor. 9:7)

  16. ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP I. “WORSHIP” – WHAT IS IT? II. OBJECT OF WORSHIP – “GOD,” Rom. 1:25; Lk. 4:8; Rev. 22:8-9; Ps. 14:2; Gen. 6:5; Rom. 1:17; 10:17 III. MANNER OF WORSHIP – “IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH” (Jn. 4:23-24) A. Is it important how we worship God?Rom. 15:4; Gen. 4:1-5; Heb. 11:4; Lev. 10:1-2; 2 Chron. 26:16-20; Ex. 30:7-8; Matt. 4:10 B. Worship “in truth,” 2 Jn. 9; Matt. 15:9 C. Worship “in spirit” D. Attitude in worship

  17. Attitude in Worship "God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about Him" (Psa. 89:7) • Letting mind wonder. • Improper behavior in worship, Heb. 4:13 • Dress in worship • When we arrive at worship, Heb. 10:25; Matt. 6:33; Rev. 3:16

  18. ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP I. “WORSHIP” – WHAT IS IT? II. OBJECT OF WORSHIP – “GOD,” Rom. 1:25; Lk. 4:8; Rev. 22:8-9; Ps. 14:2; Gen. 6:5; Rom. 1:17; 10:17 III. MANNER OF WORSHIP – “IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH” (Jn. 4:23-24) A. Is it important how we worship God?Rom. 15:4; Gen. 4:1-5; Heb. 11:4; Lev. 10:1-2; 2 Chron. 26:16-20; Ex. 30:7-8; Matt. 4:10 B. Worship “in truth,” 2 Jn. 9; Matt. 15:9 C. Worship “in spirit” D. Attitude in worship E. Attempts to improve worship by changing externals

  19. Attempts to Improve Worship by Changing Externals 1. “Lifting up holy hands,” 1 Tim. 2:8; Isa. 1:11-15 2. Unstructured worship Our outward acts of worship are expressions of our hearts (Previous slide: “Worshipping from the heart – ‘in spirit’”) (heart) Reverence, res- pect, remembrance, etc. Sing, pray, observe Lord’s Supper, etc. • Two ways worship can be made vain: 1) Matt. 15:9 (e.g., denominational); 2) Jn. 4:24 (fail in heart) The kind of changes under discussion will not produce “true spirituality” or make the gathering "more worshipful!"

  20. Attempts to Improve Worship by Changing Externals Solos, choirs, or special singing groups in services “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.” (Col. 3:16) • Singing a divinely commanded act of worship. Each Christian is commanded to sing. • Worship cannot be by proxy.

  21. ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP I. “WORSHIP” – WHAT IS IT? II. OBJECT OF WORSHIP – “GOD,” Rom. 1:25; Lk. 4:8; Rev. 22:8-9; Ps. 14:2; Gen. 6:5; Rom. 1:17; 10:17 III. MANNER OF WORSHIP – “IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH” (Jn. 4:23-24) IV. PLACE OF WORSHIP, Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:20, 23ff; 16:1-2

  22. An order given to churches, not individuals! The word for collection is the same word used for collec- tions at assemblies in idol’s temples.(Deissmann, Light from the Ancient East, p. 105) 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 “Now concerning the (2) collection for the saints, as I gave order to the (1) churches of Galatia, so also do ye. Upon the first day of the week let each one of you lay by him in store, as he may prosper, that no (3) collections be made when I come.” What Paul wanted done on the first day of the week is what he did not want to be done when he arrived in Corinth.
