  2. Dred Scott’s childhood • He was born in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1799 • They called him Sam, because his older brother was called Dred. • When his older brother died as a young man, he was now called Dred. Poor black children.

DRED SCOTT THE SLAVE • Dred Scott was a slave he lived with his master in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri. • Illinois and Wisconsin were free states, but Missouri was a slave state. • His master passed away in Missouri . • When John Emerson (Dred’s owner) died, John Sandford became his owner, Sandford was Emerson’sbrother in law. • John Sandford wanted that Scott willnot be free. • Sandford sued Scott for his freedom. Slaves working on the cotton farm.

  4. Chief Justice Roger B. Taney • Chief Justice Roger B. Taney was against Scott. • He said that no black-free or slave-was able to sue in federal court. • Because according to the Constitution they could not become citizens. Justice Roger B. Taney

  6. Dates to remember. • He was born in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1799. • He was freed on May 26, 1857. • His daughter Eliza Scott was born in 1838. • His wife died in June 17, 1876. • He died from tuberculosis in September 17, 1858.
