  3. Purposes of This Workshop? • To update instructors interested in public education • To improve Instructor skills • To recruit from public education

  4. Why a Workshop? • Provide information on the latest developments • Encourage professional quality instructors • Emphasize that quality instruction pays dividends • Better recruiting • Higher retention

  5. Why a Workshop? • N-TRAIN emphasis on RBS team of PV, VE, PE and PA. • State Rangers and others requesting 2 hour “campfire” presentations this summer as well as VE and PA stations at launch ramps. Chance to educate, recruit, & entertain.

Education Update • Weekend Navigator Instructor Guide for chapters 1-5 being rewritten to help instructors convert course to TRADITIONAL navigation course. • You do NOT need to use this new guide! • If like me you teach from electronic perspective with traditional techniques imbedded go ahead. • No word as to new navigation class for MT.

  17. Consider Learning Styles • Reading – 10% • Listening – 20% • Charts – 30 % • Films & Videos – 40% • Demonstrations – 50% • Role Playing – 80%

  18. Prepare Thoroughly • Study your material • Anticipate questions • Stay flexible • Use self critique • Review performance following class • Look for areas that can be improved

  20. Assess Constantly • Encourage positive & negative criticism • Review the students’ comments • Build on your strengths • Review missed test questions

  22. Circulate • Avoid becoming static • Move to students when talking to them • Teach to every student • Watch students’ expressions

  23. Use Questions • Ask open ended questions • Gently move students toward correct answers • Paraphrase and “tweak” incorrect answers • Help students to reshape their incorrect responses • Make them think

  24. Engage Students • Don’t turn your back on students • Use your laptop for prompts • Don’t fixate on technology

  26. Ways to Recruit in PE • Invitations to meetings • Invite at every class • Plenty of hand outs • Showcase various Auxiliary missions • Actively mention flotilla needs • Not just boats - finance, computer skills, etc

  27. Ways to Recruit in PE • Talk to students, not to each other • Talk up missions • Work in local pictures or anecdotes • Deliver the Auxiliary message, every time! • Make recruiting part of the lesson plan • Deliver benefits of membership constantly • Show enthusiasm for what you do

  28. Use VE/RBSPV Partners • Vessel Examiners and Program Visitors • Partners in recreational boating safety • Our common mission? • “Saving lives through education” • How will VEs/PVs help? • Distribute class schedules at VSCs • Share schedules with boat dealers and more

  29. Ways to Promote PE • Liaison with local insurance agents • Ask them to mail your PE schedule to clients • Think “non-traditional” • Hunting and fishing clubs • Paddlesports clubs • Public Works departments • State Parks “campfire” presentations
