  8. Barbara’s thoughts and observations • Poppy Copy -> 4 strands emphasized it takes a village • BSI -> brought students with basic skills needs to the forefront & into the public -> encouraged cooperation & creativity between student services & instruction

  9. More thinking… • BSI -> brought use of data to forefront -> inspired innovation -> more time thinking about student success -> pilots, pilots, pilots -> educated “us” about needs & value of CTE -> educated “us” about non-credit basic skills

  10. What works? • Integrated counseling • Integrated basic skills with CTE • Integrated tutoring NO MORE SILOS!!

  11. How do we decide? • Use data • Increase successful practices • Increase successful programs • Scale up successful practices & programs • Adapt from other colleges • Slow down pilot use … for now

  12. Opportunities for improvement • Instruction & Student Services still compete for funding • Too many pilots without making decisions • Put the $$ into programs that work • Clean up CB21 coding

  13. A few more opportunities … • Tendency to stop successful practices when the $$ gets tight • Tendency to stop professional development when the $$ gets tight

  16. Current work • October 10th – CCCs turned in 2011-12 Basic Skills reporting forms • e-resource – under development – will include compilation of successful practices and programs • 3csn.org : current BSI professional development grant

  17. Upcoming hot topics • MOOC: Massive Open Online Course • BSI Funding: RFA to be released on November 15th • Dual Enrollment: upcoming • Revolving doors: administrators
