This study investigates the decision-making processes involved in the merger of libraries and computing centers (MLCC) on Taiwanese campuses. Utilizing a multiple-case study approach, it identifies key factors influencing decision-makers, including personality, cognitive style, and institutional resources. With implications for library management and educational policy, the findings challenge traditional views of resource impact on decision outcomes and emphasize the significance of decision-maker characteristics. The study ultimately suggests further research into environmental factors and their consistency across institutions.

Arrangement of the Study • Purpose – • Factors of MLCC decision-making • Methodology- • Multiple-case study • Findings • 2 Categories of factors • Contributions/suggestions MLCC
Research Problem • What factors affect the decision-making process regarding the merger of libraries and computing centers on Taiwanese campuses? MLCC
Motivation for this Study • The concern with the incongruent voices • Libraries & computing centers in TW (see Figure 1) MLCC
Literature Review • Bounded rational decision-making approach---Simon(1955) • Innovation-decision process---Rogers (2003) • Conceptual Framework--- Two Categories of Factors MLCC
Methodology • Approach of Multiple-case Study • Limitations • Research Design • Selected schools • Selected interviewees • instrument MLCC
Patterning Findings & Factors • Factors of Environment • Change of Application of IT • Change of duty & mission of libraries & computing centers • Limitation of resources from the Ministry Of Edu. • Factors of Decision-makers’ Personality • Cognitive style • Attitudes & knowledge • Judgment • Tolerance of ambiguity • Decision-maker’s proposition to the problem MLCC
Conclusions • Conclusion 1: • Factors vs. Budget Resources & Size • Budget Resources & Size do not matter • Decision-makers’ personality is a key factor • Conclusion 2: • MLCC is an Authoritative Decision • Doesn’t match Rogers’ 5 stages (O’Neil, 2000) • Echoes Simon’s bounded rationality DM MLCC
Further Studies Based on 1st. Conclusion • Are the factors of environment and decision-makers’ personality the same for all MLCC schools? • Only libraries and computing centers can be combined? • Can budget resources & size be viewed as independent variables? DM’s personality as dependent variable? MLCC
Further Studies Based on 2nd.Conclusion Authoritative Decision = DM limitation • Homophily communication (Rogers 2003) MLCC
Significance of the Study §A triangle of legitimacy: Librarians + IT Specialists + Administrators § Curriculum design: management + law §Suggestion to IFLA: thinking culturally MLCC
