  5. Year Nine A BALANCED COURSE Compulsory Core Subjects taken with your form group. • English Semester 1 and 2 • Mathematics Semester 1 and 2 • Science Semester 1 and 2 • Phys. Ed. Semester 1 and 2 • Humanities Semester 1 or 2 - Geography, History and Economics • Exploring Art Semester 1 or 2 • Exploring Visual Art or Exploring Drama or Exploring Music

  7. DUKE OF EDINBURGH PROGRAM • Students in this program are expected to be in it for the entire semester. • Application process is outlined in booklet. • Short presentation in Room 10 at 7.10 pm

  10. Year Nine - Electives Extra Electives Students have two extra elective subjects of their choice during the year, with options from all Key Learning Areas. Possibilities include: LOTE - French or Indonesian ENGLISH • Debate & Public Speaking • Creative Writing SCIENCE • Sustainability • HUMANITIES • - Learning to Lead

  12. Year Nine - Electives Extra Electives SPECIALIST PROGRAMS Bridging English • Runs for one semester • Open to all students but especially recommended for students who have been in the school’s Literacy program in Year 7 and Year 8.

  13. Year Nine - Electives Extra Electives SPECIALIST PROGRAMS Bridging Mathematics • Runs for one or two semesters • Open to all students but especially recommended for students who have been in the school’s numeracy program in years 7 or 8.

  14. Year Nine - Electives Extra Electives EXTRA COURSES IN: PHYSICAL EDUCATION ARTS TECHNOLOGY Students can mix/match eg one extra Arts, one extra Technology, etc.

  15. YEAR 9 CITY EXPERIENCE“Meeting Melbourne” Alternative program during Term 3 Course outline: Students may have the opportunity to be involved in a city program. The aim of the program is to improve student engagement and develop independence and responsibility. The program will enable students to develop: • Interpersonal skills Independent learning • Confidence Punctuality • Responsibility Teamwork • Self-esteem • Students will be encouraged to work on and improve their self directed learning • Students move around the city in small groups of 4 or 5, carrying out their research. • Students will also visit places of significance to Melbourne’s cultural, sporting and political life. • There will be a fee involved with this program. Further information will be distributed to all students early in 2013.

  17. TIMELINE Wednesday August 8th • Students can access the Course Information Booklet on School Home page (under ‘News’) Thursday August 9th • Year 10 students have their MIPS appointment.

TIMELINE Monday August 13th – Friday August 24th Students given their email and password information Students access the subject selection online to choose their subjects for Year 9 & 10 for 2013. Link will be on the school website homepage. Once completed, print off their selection, parent signature and place in the box in the Middle School Office

  19. Costs for certain courses: check the handbook (located on School Home page under ‘News’) Limited places in some subjects, eg. Duke of Edinburgh in Year 9, VCE in Year 10 Choose subjects carefully Year 10 students need to plan for VCE and beyond. Final Comments…

  20. YEAR 10 2013 Subject Information

  21. COURSE STRUCTURE • Students complete 6 subjects per semester. • All subjects are time weighted equally, meaning there are 5 periods a week per subject of face to face teacher time. • Year 10’s do not have any free study periods.

COURSE STRUCTURE CONTINUED • English and Mathematics are compulsory. • Students choose either General Maths or Maths Methods. • There are two other Mathematics, they are Pathways Maths or Specialist Maths, they are currently by invitation and decisions will be made later this year as to the appropriate class for your child.

  23. THE RULES • Students choose 8 electives across the year. This equates to four each semester. • Students MUST choose 1 subject from each key learning area. • English is chosen for you. • Students can choose a VCE or VET subject, however neither are compulsory in 2013.

  24. RULES cont. • Student MUST choose 1 subject from • Humanities • Science • PASE • The Arts • Technology As a minimum for the 2013 year.

  25. RULES cont. • Students can only take a maximum of three semesters of study from any one key learning area over the year. This simply means only three from Science, PASE, Technology and so on. • The exception to this rule is where a student chooses a VCE/VET subject, they can take 4 semesters over the year.

  26. RULES continued. • As an example, if a student chose to take VCE Legal Studies – Units 1 and 2, the student could also enrol in History and Geography in the same year. These are all Humanities subjects. • If the same student chose not to do a VCE subject in Year 10, they could choose History, Geography and Economics across the year. (they can not do more than 2 subjects from the same KLA per semester).

Handbook • The handbook is on both the LHS website and Studywiz. • I encourage you strongly to read it carefully and discuss the choices. • You should have all received a list of rooms to visit on your way into the hall. Please take the time to speak to teachers about the subjects on offer at both Year 10 and VCE as you will find much of the advice invaluable.
