  1. DD03Video Analysis of Projectile Motion Larry Dukerich - Arizona State U & Dobson HS Dwain Desbien - Arizona State U & Chandler- Gilbert College

  2. Video analysis software- a useful tool Clip from Physics of Sports

  3. Video analysis software- a useful tool Slope = velocity Slope = acceleration Graphs from VideoGraph - PAS

  4. Video analysis software • Canned movies are OK, but… • They’re someone else’s idea of interesting motion. • Students don’t get chance to produce and examine parabolic motion on their own.

  5. Video capture - then • Expensive hardware requirements • fast computers with video cards • expensive, high-end VCR’s • Used to be difficult and tedious • frame by frame capture • dropped frames made analysis tricky

  6. Video capture - now, with iMac • Alt 1: VHS and video capture box • Use low-cost iMac ($800) or USB G3 Mac • Standard VHS camera or VCR • MyVideo from Eskape Labs ($250) www.eskapelabs.com Avid Cinema software

  7. USB Video capture box Output to USB port Composite video signal from VCR or camera

  8. Video capture - with iMac DV • Alt 2: Digital video input • Digital camera and Firewire (IEEE 1394) • iMac DV ($1000) • iMovie software

  9. Digital video - iMac DV FireWire connector

  10. Producing QuickTime movies

  11. Physics - 2nd Quarter Project • Produce and analyze video of projectile motion. • Teams of 3 - 4 students • Done outside of class time • Required minimal teacher intervention

  12. Sample student movies Object of known length for calibration

  13. Sample student movies Ashley & Lindsay - Girls’ soccer team

  14. Sample student movies Garrett wanted to jump from the 2nd floor.

  15. Sample student movies A boy and his dog

  16. Sample student movies Not your typical basketball shot.

  17. Sample student movies Restriction: no living thing may come to harm.

  18. Sample student movies Crash and burn!
