Understanding DNA and RNA: Quiz and Interactive Learning Stations

Prepare for our upcoming quiz on DNA and RNA this Friday! We will engage in learning stations where you'll have 10 minutes per station to explore essential concepts like mutations, gene expressions, and the roles of DNA and RNA. Stay on track, as I'll introduce a new countdown method where you must find a partner quickly when prompted. At the end of class, complete an exit ticket covering what you've learned, including questions about Tay-Sachs disease, polydactyly, and genes. Let's deepen our understanding of genetics together!

  1. Do Now: COPY in notes!

  2. Announcements • Short quiz on Friday covering DNA and RNA.

  3. Stations • There will be an exit ticket at the end of class about the information from the stations. • You need to stay on TRACK. • 10 minutes per station. • WARNING: I’m going to try something new. At a few points I’ll give a countdown, when I do YOU NEED TO FIND A PARTNER ASAP!

  4. Finish your station early? • Answer the following on the back: • Explain what happens during a deletion and insertion mutation. • Explain what I mean by a frameshift mutation. • Remember the sentence: The cat sat in a hat. • What’s the job of our DNA? • What’s the job of our RNA? • How are DNA and RNA related? How do they work together? • What do you think I mean by a “dominant gene?” • I haven’t taught this yet! • What do you think I mean by a “recessive gene?” • Complete the complementary DNA strand: A _ C _ G _ T _ G _ A _ T _ G _ C _ • Complete the complementary RNA strand: U _ A _ G _ C _ C _ A _ U _ C_ _ C

  5. Exit Ticket • Explain what happens during Tay-Sachs disease. • What is polydactyly? • What does it mean for someone to have Down Syndrome and how does it affect their DNA? • We’re talking about mutations. What questions do you still have? • We’ve talked about dwarfism before during the endocrine system. Compare and contrast the two different types of dwarfism we have learned.

  6. Dominant and Recessive Genes • A dominant gene is the gene that will be expressed if one of the parents has the trait. • A recessive gene must have two recessive genes in order to be expressed.

  7. Pedigree • A pedigree is a diagram of family relationships that includes two or more generations.
