  2. What is culture? • Definition: culture is a system of beliefs, knowledge, institutions, customs/traditions, languages and skills shared by a group of people. • Through a society’s culture, individuals learn the relationships, structures, patterns and processes to be members of the society.

  3. What are elements of culture? • All the different aspects that make up culture are known as the elements of culture • The elements of culture consist of: • FOOD • LANGUAGE • CLOTHING • TRADITIONS • BELIEFS • THE ARTS • SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS

  4. FOOD • Any nourishing substance that is eaten in order to sustain life, provide energy and promote growth. • Different cultures have unique food that they eat • What is a food you like that's from another culture?

  5. LANGUAGE • Any words or symbols used to communicate • Different cultures have unique languages that they share • Write down some other languages you have heard of.

  6. CLOTHING • Garments that cover the body • Different cultures have unique clothing that they wear • What are some typical American clothes?

  7. TRADITIONS • Customs practiced from one generation to the next • Different cultures have unique customs that they practice • Celebrating the 4th of July, Christmas, Easter • Mexico- Day of the Dead • What is a tradition your family celebrates every year?

BELIEFS • The assumptions we make about ourselves, about others in the world and about how we expect things to be • Different cultures have different beliefs that are accepted • Acceptable for women to work and to have an active role in society in the U.S.A. • Write down the belief mentioned above.

  9. THE ARTS • Different activities where something is created with the imagination that is beautiful to the artist • Different cultures have unique examples of the Arts that they share • Examples include literature, dance, drama, music, art, etc. • Write down one specific example

  10. SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS • an organizational system which functions to satisfy basic social needs • Different cultures have unique institutions that they share • Examples are government, economy, education, religion, family
