  2. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked To what extent are we able to find the Blueprint for evangelism being out worked in the life of the church? Motivation: The Glory of God. Our approach to evangelism is often too man-centred. Cf. Lk.10v20. Isa. 48v11. The N.T. gives 3 pictures to counter a man-centred approach. A Farmer: Paul taught that without God we will not see any growth. 1Cor.3v5-9. Presentation 03

  3. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Motivation: The Glory of God. A Midwife: Her task is to assist in a new birth, she may even share some of the pain [Gal.4v19]. We must not assume the work of God’s Spirit who, ‘convicts the world of sin … Jn.16v8. An Ambassador: We are “ambassadors of Christ” 2 Cor. 5v20. Our task is that of simply delivering a message. We are not responsible for the response made to it. Presentation 03

  4. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Confidence: Success Assured. When Paul was about to leave Corinth because it proved to be a very difficult place to evangelise, God spoke in a dream cf. Acts 18v9-11 3. Urgency: Day of Opportunity. Paul says in, 1Cor. 6.19, “I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” cf. 1Tim. 4v2 “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season” Presentation 03

  5. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked 3. Urgency: Day of Opportunity. Paul says in, 1Cor. 6.19, “I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” cf. 1Tim. 4v2 “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season” 4. Fruitfulness: Life through Death. Paul saw this important principle was outworked in his life,“…..So then death is at work in us but life in you” 2Cor 4.v6-12. As more of the resurrection life of Jesus is seen in us we will be seen to be different. Read 1 Peter 3:15 and Colossians4:6. Implying that unbelievers will ask questions! Presentation 03

  6. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Approach: People-Centred not Programme-Centred. People feel safe with rigid programmes and find it hard to grasp that ‘accommodation is not compromise’. Paul addressed this problem in a key passage, 1 Cor.9v19-24 “…I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some”. Paul did not allow cultural, ethnic or social differences to hinder the mission of God. Even in the way in which Paul presented his material was influenced by his audience. Contrast his approach in the Synagogue addressing Jews with his approach on Mars Hill in Athens. Acts 13v15-43 with 17v22-34. “We cannot evangelise unless we understand the Word; and we cannot evangelise unless we understand the world”. DONALD MACLEOD Presentation 03

  7. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Its Message: The Gospel of the Kingdom. We cannot argue people into the kingdom of God nor should we try to win them by diluting the gospel. Cf. 1Cor.1v18-2v5 “my message and my words were not with wise and persuasive words but with the demonstration of the Spirit’s power.” When Paul communicated the gospel what he did was teach- he engaged attention, captured interest, set out the facts, explained their significance, solved difficulties, answered questions and showed how the message changes people’s lives.   8. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Its Message: The Gospel of the Kingdom. The word 'evangelism' comes from a Greek term meaning literally 'to bring or to spread good news'. It is impossible, therefore, to talk about evangelism without talking about the content of the good news. What is it? At its very simplest, it is Jesus, he is the essence of the gospel. It is said of the early church that they gossiped the gospel! Presentation 03

  9. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Its Message: The Gospel of the Kingdom. We do not need to have all the theological answers if we can witness to what God has done for us. Vance Havner writes; “Any man touched by Jesus Christ is good publicity for the gospel” “Our mind is the controlling citadel of our personality, and true evangelism never bypasses the mind. What the Holy Spirit does in conversion is to bring people to Christ, not in spite of the evidence, but because of the evidence when he opens their minds to attend to it. In the New Testament, conversion is not infrequently portrayed as a response not only to Christ but to 'the truth', even to a 'form of teaching' [Rom. 6:17]”.JOHN STOTT Presentation 03

  10. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Its Expectation: Not all who Profess will Endure Because God is the supreme evangelist only those whose hearts he opens can effectively respond. Cf Lydia Acts 16v14. All men are dead in trespasses and sins and need God to make them spiritually alive so that they can respond to him cf. Eph2v4.   11. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Its Expectation: Not all who Profess will Endure Paul writes of his travelling companion, “Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me” 2Tim.4v10. This is an illustration of seed falling among thorns from Matt.13v22. Endurance is the mark of the genuine believer, 2Tim.2v12, and again Mark 13v13, “Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved”. Presentation 03

  12. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Its Method: Intercession The priestly role of Israel was perfected in Christ, and is now assumed by the N.T. church [1 Pet 2v9; Rev 1v6]. The mission of the church is shaped by seasoned times of prayer. Cf. Acts 4v23-31, 6v4, 13v2 Paul told Timothy that “prayer should be made for all men in order that they might be saved”. 1 Tim 2v1-4. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked Its Method: Intercession Jesus prayed for a church made up of mature believers.Part of that maturity involves understanding the mission of God, who wants his picture back [ Eph. 1v17-23, Col. 1v8-12. ] and use their God-given gifts for that purpose [ Eph.4v11-13 ]. Significantly , the first petition in the Lord’s prayer is, “Thy kingdom come” Matt.6v10. Presentation 03

  14. 5. Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked 9. The Scope of his Mission: Universal. The church in Antioch recognised the importance of worldwide evangelisation Acts 11v19-26. also 13v 2. Paul rejoiced to be the apostle to the Gentiles Acts 9v15 , and Rom. 1v5. Paul’s missionary journeys became more and more wide-ranging. When writing to the Romans he was contemplating a trip to Spain Rom.15v24-28. Presentation 03

Jesus’ Blueprint Unpacked The Scope of his Mission: Universal In answer to the question to whom should we share the gospel the NT makes it abundantly clear that the gospel is not discriminatory of a person’s religious or ethnic background, intellectual capacity, wealth or social status, or even sinful past etc. The heart of God ‘desires all men to be saved’. 1Tim. 2v4. Presentation 03
