  2. The Faculty Internship Program A joint project supported by the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community Colleges Association a.k.a. SDICCCA

  3. Faculty Internship Program Participating Districts • San Diego Community College District (Mesa, City, Miramar) • Palomar College • MiraCosta College • Southwestern College • Grossmont-Cuyamaca C.C. District (Grossmont and Cuyamaca) • Imperial Valley College • Mt. San Jacinto College District

  4. PURPOSE of the Internship Program • RECRUIT • TRAIN • MENTOR and PLACE the next generation of community college faculty and counselors. ULTIMATE GOAL: A Faculty that mirrors the diversity of California’s people.

  5. Program Facts • Begun in 1994 (CCCCO Grant) • 35-45 Interns per year • 150+ Applicants per year • Over 400 interns served in 14 years • Longest existing and largest internship program in the country

Phases of the Internship Program • 11 Month Program • PHASE 1: Application, screening, paired with mentors • PHASE 2: Summer Institute Course • PHASE 3: Fall Semester-Interns “shadow” their mentors+Institute meetings • PHASE 4: Spring Semester—Interns teach own section+ Institute meetings, graduate.

  7. Phase I Application Process • Recruitment of Students • Universities • Community Based Organizations • Military Bases • Ethnic Organizations • Former Interns –Word of Mouth • Community College Web Pages

  8. Phase I Application Process • Must have a MA/MS OR be at least 1/2 way through a MA/MS program • Download App from Web Page • http://interwork.sdsu.edu/courses/cc/index.html • Chose top 3 colleges • Submit app, transcripts, resume • Deadline Date = March 15th

  9. KEY ELEMENTS of the Program • Graduate Institute (curriculum and teaching) • Mentoring by full-time Faculty/Counselors • Program Leadership: Coordinator College Site Coordinators

  10. Phase II - Faculty Internship Institute • Summer “Boot Camp”— 3 weeks, 2 evenings per week. Held at GCC • Monthly Friday Afternoon Meetings on Campuses • Approx. 8 meetings during the Academic Year

Phase II Institute Meeting Highlights • Real-time Link with other Interns • Defines the Role of a Faculty Member • Focuses on the Teaching/Learning Process • Elements of Good Teaching Practices • Community College Structures & Organization • The C.C. Hiring Process • Interns Practice Interviewing Techniques

  12. Phase III -Fall Semester • Sit in on Mentor classes • Tutor students • Prepare course materials • Learn the college community • Teach segments of class • Attend Friday afternoon seminars

  13. Phase IV-Spring Semester • Teach class as Adjunct (IF successful in fall and IF section is available) • Continue to learn from mentor • Continue to learn campus community • Continue to attend Friday afternoon seminars • Graduate from program

  14. Campus Site Coordinators • Link between Intern and Department Chairs • Assist Intern adjustment to Campus • Troubleshoot Problems • Mediate Issues Between Mentors & Interns • Serve on Program’s Steering Committee
