  1. The 10 Commandments Exodus 19-20 Main truth: God gives clear instructions about living to those who are prepared to listen.

  2. I. Preparation for the giving of the Law- Exodus 19 • An exchange between God and the people in which they were asked if they were willing to enter into a covenant with the Lord and they responded they were. Verses 1-8 • 3-day period of ceremonial cleansing and consecration Verses 9-15. • Limited access of the mountain, when God came down upon it, they should touch it and die. verses 16-25. This preparation was a visible expression of the principle later expressed 4x in Leviticus. (Be Holy because I am holy. Because God is holy, His people must be holy.

The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 • The first commandment: You shall have no other gods before me. • The first commandment begins in the area of our relationships to God. • We break this command when we look for direction to other sources such as astrology; • When we give some person or some thing the first place in our affections, which belongs to God alone; • Whenever they assume the right to determine their own moral standards.

  5. II. The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 • The first commandment: You shall have no other gods before me. • We are to worship God with all our heart, soul and mind. • How? We need to see EVERYTHING IN LIFE from GOD’ POINT of VIEW, to make His moral will our guide and His glory our goal; Him FIRST in our thoughts, relationships, work, leisure time and recreation. This would mean exercising responsible stewardship of all the money, time and talents He has entrusted to us.

The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 The 2nd commandment: You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven or on earth, beneath or in the waters below. • The first commandment deals with the object of our worship, forbidding the worship of any false god. • This 2nd commandment deals with the “manner” of our worship, forbidding even the worship even of the true God in an unworthy manner.

The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 The 2nd commandment: You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven or on earth, beneath or in the waters below. • Images dishonor God, they obscure His glory • Images mislead men, they are harmful • Worshiping God rightly (John 4:23 says, we are to worship Him in spirit and in truth) • Worship Him by diligent study of the Scriptures to discover God’s character

The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 The 3rd commandment: You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God • Importance of the names of God; the name of God represents the nature of God; his praiseworthy attributes. • What are the names of God that you always remember? • We honor God when we understand what these names signify, praise Him accordingly, and let Him do the these tasks in and for us.

  9. II. The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 The 4th commandment: Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. • It prescribes the seventh day of the week, Saturday, as a day of Sabbath rest. That Sunday observance is wrong. • Sunday is merely the new testament equivalent of the old testament sabbath, and is to be observed by cessation from all work.

Then, you will live a LONG LIFE, FULL LIFE in the land the Lord your God will give you. • Psalm 90:10, Our days may come to 70 years, or 80, if our strength endures. • Lev 19:3, each of you must show respect for your mother and father. • Honoring our earthly parents we see, as our gesture of honoring our God the Father in heaven whom we do not see. • Political fathers, spiritual parents, so the command also has to do with rightful authority, respect for authority, and obedience.

  11. II. The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 The 6th commandment: You shall not murder. • In God’s sight, murder is not merely taking another’s life unjustly. It is anger and even uttering expressions of contempt. Matthew 5:21-22 • What about “reputational murder” or “character assassination”? Murder is thought of as seeking damage to someone even if it never happens; exhibit jealousy. • Mercy killing or “euthanasia”

  12. II. The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 The 7th commandment: Do not commit adultery. • Matthew 5:28, anyone who looks lustfully has already committed adultery. • Sex on TV and in movies is almost always between unmarried people with someone other than their spouses. Or else it is homosexual.

The 10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17 The 8th commandment: You shall not steal. • Our possessions have been given to us by God (James 1:17), and therefore to steal from others is to steal from God. • We must also protect the rights and property of others, prosper them as we are able and help them attain full potential.

  16. Principles • God instructs people who are cleansed and obedient. • God speaks to people with words.

  17. III. The Response Exodus 20:18-26 The People’s Reaction to God • The appearance of God brought a terrifying fear to the people. • They no longer wanted to hear the voice of God. • Sought Moses to be a mediator to approach God.

The Response Exodus 20:18-26 God’s warning Exodus 20-26 • The Israelites had just witnessed the Lord’s mighty display of His presence and power and had heard his voice speak to Moses. • They were warned not to create a physical image (idol) to recount God, His majesty, and be an object of worship. • They were also not to have any idols that would bring worship to any other deities. • The Lord gave instructions about the altars they would used in their worship.

  19. Principles • God instructs people who are cleansed and obedient. • God speaks to people with words. • Hearing God speak produces reverence for Him and conviction of sin.

  20. Application: • What has this study revealed to you about your own sin and the need to repent of it and make substantial changes? • How much do you fear God? Do you demonstrate fear of God through respecting, believing, and trusting God enough to stop sinning, even when no one is looking? • What steps will begin taking?
