Objectives By the end of this presentation: • You will understand what will be learned during the SSC and how it will be learned • You will understand what will be involved in being a student on the SSC • You will have a better idea whether or not you want to apply (≡ informed consent) and, if so, how to do so
Aims of the course • Enhanced capability to care for a casualty in remote/wilderness setting • Enhanced generic knowledge and skills to improve patient care, whatever the environment
Generic skills • Useful/necessary whatever the setting • Communication • Teaching • Teamwork • Leadership • Working to deadlines & handling stress • Finding and using information • Risk management

What is the SSC like? • Active, adult learning • Lots of clinical knowledge and skills • Lots of learning outdoors • (Very) hard work • Often cold or wet • Likely to involve being in a cave or on a crag • Self motivation and self reliance needed • Expensive (accommodation & travel)

Application and selection • Short listing based on application form (deadline 21:00 February 24th) • Selection centre (March 13th) for up to 16 short listed students • 8 students selected • Health clearance • Health declaration/GP confirmation of fitness
