  1. Creating a Heavenly Culture in the Church

  2. Colossians 3:1-4 Col 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

  3. Col 3:5-11 Col 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

  4. Col 3:12-14 Col 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

  5. Background Written by the Apostle Paul around 63 AD while imprisoned in Rome Written to a young church started by Epaphras The Purpose of the letter was to refute false doctrines and encourage faithfulness in the believers Colossae, located in present day Turkey was once a prominent city in Asia Minor but by this time it had diminished into a second rate market town The Colossian church was primarily Gentile in population and because of the trade business, it was exposed to many thoughts and ideas brought by traders.

  6. False Doctrines* Ceremonialism/Legalism.2:16-17, 2:11; 3:11. Asceticism.2:21,23. Angel worship.2:18 Depreciation of Christ.1:15-20; 2:2-3,9. Secret knowledge (beginnings of Gnosticism ) 2:18, 2:2-3 Reliance on human wisdom and tradition.2:4,8. *Though Paul doesn’t come out directly and name these heresies, they are implied by what he writes to the Colossians.

  7. Major Themes Christ is the very image of God (1:15), Christ is the Creator (1:16), Christ is the preexistent sustainer of all things (1:17), Christ is the head of the church (1:18), Christ is the first to be resurrected (1:18), Christ is the fullness of deity in bodily form (1:19, 2:9) Christ is the reconciler (1:20-22). Thus Christ is completely adequate.

  8. Christ’s Way Vs. The Rest Christ’s way is sufficient and is superior because He is the head over every power and authority (Col 2:10) On the other hand, the Colossian heresy was altogether inadequate. It was hollow and deceptive and depended on man’s abilities and wisdom not Christ’s (Col 2:8). It did not have the power to restrain the sinful nature (Col 2:13).

  10. Called to Seek and Think… Set your hearts (to seek- zeteo) the same word used in Seek first his kingdom. Christ is not just to be admired but he is to be worshiped as Lord. Set your minds- ( phroneo- to think on, regard, to have a certain attitude) this controls how we perceive everything around us. Seeing everything in light of eternity and God’s plan.

  11. Since, then… We have been raised with Christ we have all we need for godly lives (2Pet 1:3) We have all we need for sanctification (1Cor 6:11) We have all we need for justification (Rom 5:1) We have all we need for redemption (Gal 3:13-14) We have all we need for reconciliation (Rom 5:10) We have all we need for life on this earth (Mt 6:32-33) We should have the attitude of the Psalmist: Ps 73:25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

  12. Motivations Our lives are hidden in Christ Christ will return one day We will be with Him in glory

  13. Active Discipleship not Passive Religion Col 3:5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

  14. We Start Square… What we are like before being in Christ The need to rid ourselves of sinful ways

  15. What happens when we try to be in Christ without getting rid of worldly ways. We Will Not Fit Without Change

  16. What needs to happen to be in Christ. We Must Rid Ourselves of…

  17. We Need to Replace What Was Removed Col 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

  18. A Call to Action Study out the uniqueness and supremacy of Jesus - starting with the cross. Get your eyes off the world and on things above. Take off the filthy garments of your old life and put on the new clothes that are fitting for the new person you are. Love as Christ has loved you. If you are searching for a relationship with God make a decision to get to know God’s heart by studying his word.

  19. The Result A little bit of Heaven on earth in the Church
