  42. Keep Your Beliefs in Check • Oak Elementary School: Researchers Rosenthal and Jacobson (1992) administered an intelligence test to all students at the beginning of the school year. Then they randomly selected 20% of the students-without looking at the test results- and reported to the teachers that these students showed “unusual potential for intellectual growth” and “could be expected to bloom in their academic performance.”

  43. Keep Your Beliefs in Check Eight months later, at the end of the academic year, the researchers came back and retested all the students. Students who were randomly labeled as “intelligent” showed significant improvement in test performance over those who were not singled out for the teachers’ attention. The change in teacher expectations resulted in an actual change in achievement!
