The Goals of SB611 1. Use real projects to develop a broad set of business-relevant skills: • Applying knowledge to real business situations • Problem identification • Data collection • Generation of alternatives • Presenting findings • Project management • Client interaction/client management • Business development • Preparing proposals and contracts • Ethical client interaction 2. Apply and develop specific knowledge of business processes, organizations, and their environments
SB611 Academic Expectations • Complete text readings and individual assignments on-time and at a very high level of quality. • Complete individual project tasks on-time and at a very high level of quality. • Contribute to team-based tasks in an effective and efficient manner.
SB611 Academic Expectations In many ways, client deliverables are held to a higher quality standard than typical class assignments; these represent not only you, but also the School of Business and University. Your work ultimately affects your client and their stakeholders - this is a lot of responsibility and you need to take it seriously.
SB611 Behavioral Expectations • Act professionally at all times when meeting with clients and working on client sites. • Work effectively with undergraduate students on your teams. • Follow all relevant laws and University regulations. • Behave in an ethical manner at all times. • Be flexible, be responsive, and maintain a positive attitude. • Be on-time, dressed appropriately, and prepared for all class meetings, team meetings, and client meetings.
Fall Semester Projects • Adirondack Scenic Railroad • Tourist railroad with multiple locations in NNY • Analysis of prospects for converting operations to biodiesel • CORC Store • Potsdam non-profit second hand store • Analysis of current practices, assistance in planning for expansion and/or relocation • Clarkson Childcare Center • Continuation of feasibility study started in Spring 2008 • Project will focus on financial analysis • Northern Adirondack Trading Cooperative • Non-profit organization that assists local entrepreneurs • Focus on marketing assistance for businesses
Should You Take Consulting Group? • CCG is a lot of work, but is a great experience for students who are willing and motivated to do the work. • It can provide good material for your resume and behavioral interview questions if you don’t already have significant work experience. • If you already know that consulting does not interest you, consider international study options. • If you are concerned about workload, consider one of the university-based study abroad options (Steyr, Reims).
Timing Take it in the spring unless… • You have significant previous business education or experience and a particular interest in one of the projects for fall semester. • Spring is better for most students because you have more in-depth knowledge with the modules under your belt. • This also gives you more time to consider and apply for the international study options.
