  1. TOPIC TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS

  2. A conceptual scheme for understanding relationships based on three transactional mental states: Parent, Adult, Child

  3. Parent: dominating; critical & judgmental; demanding; “ought's & should’s”; conventional Adult: reality-oriented & objective; responsible; productive; disciplined; reasonable Child: self-centered & subjective; irresponsible; undisciplined (break rules); spontaneous; creative; emotional

  4. “Parallel” transactions (say P → P) produce harmonious outcomes which may be functional or dysfunctional. “Crossed” transactions (say P → A)create interpersonal conflict, which may be functional or dysfunction.

  5. The 3 PAC mindset states create 9 possible transactional exchanges: I can be in the Parent state & transact with you as though you were in the Parent (P → P), Adult (P →A), or Child (P →C) state.

  6. The other 6 possible transactional states: A→ P A→A A→C C→ P C →A C →C

  7. Each of these 9 T.A. mindset states, if reinforced frequently, can become “scripts” that cause people to habitually interact in the same functional or dysfunctional ways.

  8. Scripts I’m OK-You’re not OK (P) I’m-OK-You’re OK (A) I’m Not OK-You’re not OK (C)

  9. Common scripts: Ain’t it awful! (P→P) Compromise (A→A) Goof-off (C→C)

  10. Common scripts: You’ll be sorry!(P→C) It’s not my fault! (C→P) I wish you would…(C→P) Let’s cut our losses (A→A)

  11. Some of our relationships may be static (deterministic) on a functional or dysfunctional level because of our inability or unwillingness to modify T.A. exchanges.

  12. We can often change our relationship with others by changing the PAC mindset we transact with them in. This often forces them to interact in a different state as well, thus altering the script.

  13. To engage in authentic conversation, scripts must be thrown away. What scripts & “small talk” can you use when visiting prison inmates?

  14. Scripted life is lazy life. How many one-script relationships do you have, & how long do stick to that 1 script? Want more life? Write more scripts.

  23. PENNY: “We’ve got enough cars on the lot now to make it Friday and Saturday. No need to call around to see if other Wheels units want to unload some of their inventory on us.” (A→A)

  24. ARMANDO: “Penny, we’re short on both sub-compact and full-size right now.” You know that! Call Wheels in Victoria & Galveston & tell them they need to help us out right now.” (P→C)

  25. RYAN: Armando, I agree with Penny. Tomorrow is Saturday when rentals are usually slow. Besides I’m behind on clean-up for cars on the lot now. I’m not sure what I’ll do if 7 or 8 more cars show up. Let’s take it easy until next week and enjoy the weekend. Whatdya say?” (C→C)

  26. PENNY: “The last time we called Victoria they said they would get 5 cars right over to us, but they didn’t come through. Remember, Armando? Why should we work so much harder than they do? If we’re a little bit short on cars this weekend, what’s the big deal?“(C→C)

  27. ARMANDO: “Hey, you two must have big plans for the weekend to be so lazy. I make my best commissions off selling those big SUVs & trucks for tourists headin’ to the beach. Why should we let Avis & Thrifty in Corpus have all the money? Let’s get our share while we can—it’s going to be great weather this weekend, which means both Corpus & Padre are going to be packed.” (P→C& A → A)

  31. “Too many customers are gripy.” “I definitely know what you mean. It irritates me too. I just try not to give them a reason to gripe at me.”

  32. “Armando sure does like to B.S. with people.” “For sure he likes to talk, but that’s probably one of the reasons he rents more cars out than any of the rest of us.”
