  1. The DeBakey HSHP Mathematics Department Our Mission: To prepare students for success in AP Calculus while helping them to develop an appreciation and proficiency with mathematical thinking which can be applied to real life situations. Our Vision: We will have high expectations of ourselves and of our students, be willing to take risks and to be challenged, work collaboratively and be patient in the process.

  2. The DeBakey HSHP Mathematics Department. • Our Goals: • Continuously work to improve and enhance curriculum • Vertically align curriculum based on Houston ISD curriculum and best practices for PreAP/AP alignment • Create one common assessment per cycle per course (written and distributed at least 2 weeks prior to administration) • Have a common grading policy (Department wide) • Have a common lesson schedule/framework for each course • Integrate AP style free response questions at all levels • Integrate other disciplines into the curriculum • Continue motivating students toward taking the AP exam at all grade levels. • Work collaboratively towards improving the performance of at-risk students and communicate proactively with parents and administration regarding at-risk students

  3. 4-year Math Curriculum Sequence • 9th Grade: Geometry (M) / Pre AP (Algebra I (M) for those who need it) • 10th Grade: Algebra II (M) / PreAP • 11th Grade: Precalculus (M) / PreAP • 12th Grade: AP Calculus AB / AP Calculus BC • AP Statistics can be taken after completing Algebra 2. We recommend students to take it in 11th or 12th Grade. Currently it is offered before school everyday from 7 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. • A 6 week Algebra 2 PreAP course is offered in summer for qualifying students. • We have started to offer AP Computer Science course this year.

  4. DHSHP Standards Tighten • Tests : 50 %, Quizzes : 40 %, and Homework: 10 %. • Typically 2 – 3 tests, 3 - 4 quizzes are given every cycle. • Projects may be assigned and they may be equivalent to a test grade or a quiz grade depending upon the type and extent of the project. • Tests and quizzes are graded and returned to the students normally during the next class.

  5. DHSHP Standards Tighten • Homework questions are reviewed/answered before starting a new lesson. Students are encouraged to do homework sincerely and regularly and be prepared to ask questions during homework review. • Tentative schedule of lessons and assessments during the whole cycle is given to the students so that they can plan their study time effectively. • Progress report is issued after the third week of the cycle. Parents are requested to monitor the progress of their child through quizzes and tests which are returned to the students. Grades are also posted on Gradespeed.

  6. Summer Practice • Practice questions are available on the DeBakey HSHP website at the end of the school year for students to use to practice math skills throughout the summer. (Under Academics – Mathematics Dept) http://hisd.schoolwires.net/debakey

  7. Tutorials/Extra Help • Note: Tutoring is effective only if students put in efforts to work on the problems and come up with specific questions which can be answered by the teacher to facilitate better learning and understanding of the concepts. • Title I tutorial program meets Monday – Thursday from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (except when there is a faculty meeting) and from 7:00 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. on Monday – Thursday – Check the schedule attached. • At risk students are placed in morning tutorials from 7:50 a.m. to 8:20 a.m., Tuesday through Thursday.

  8. Review Sessions. • A Review session will be offered on Saturday, December 15, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. before the Fall Semester Final Examination. • Review sessions for AP courses will be offered on designated Saturdays and everyday after school in April 2013 – Dates will be announced later. • PSAT Math Review sessions were offered after school on October 10 and 11 and a Mock PSAT was offered on Saturday, Sept 29.
