Empathy Project = Life Learning Students

In our project, we aimed to delve into the lives of students with disabilities and the unique challenges they face in educational settings. Through interviews with teachers and direct interactions with students, we sought to answer fundamental questions about their learning experiences and future aspirations. Our discussions revealed the need for empathy in education and the significance of understanding their individual needs. While we gained insights into their lives, we recognized that our experience provided only a glimpse of their reality. Our goal is to foster independence and inclusion in a supportive environment.

  1. Empathy Project = Life Learning Students By: Michelle and Brittany

  2. Why we chose this project... • Didn’t know what it was like for them • Didn’t understand before what they even did in the class • Wanted to learn about their lives/future

  3. Questions we started with…. • What do they learn in the class? • How do they teach the students? • What are the students like and what do they do? • What are the students lives like in general?

  4. Questions we asked the teachers.. • What is it like teaching the students? how is it different? is it harder? • Has it changed your views working with them? • What do you see out of these kids in the future? • What is it like bringing them into a normal classroom? what is your goal from that?

  5. What we learned….. “The hardest thing is understanding if they get the material.” -Mr. Shishido “You have to compensate for their needs and find what is meaningful to them.” - Christine Caulk For the future of these students, “our goal is for them to gain independence, some will go to a group home if their parents can't care for them. Try to lead an as normal life as possibly some may get jobs.”- Mr. Shishido

  6. Experience

  7. What we got out of the experience • learned about each of their disabilities • Got to meet each of the students • Gained an understanding of the students

  8. Did we practice empathy?..... • A little but mostly sympathy • We didn’t actually experience their lives.
