  3. Schedule • Tomorrow: First draft due • If your draft is at the required length you do not have to come to class on Friday • Friday: I will be available to talk about drafts • Monday: Holiday • Tuesday: Final draft due • Wednesday: In class writing

  4. Citations • Purdue Owl • MLA Citations • Pay attention to where the parentheses and the punctuation go. • Go through your essay. Wherever you used outside information include a citation. The citation should be the author’s last name in parentheses. • If no author is given, put the first few words of the title in quotation marks in parentheses.

  5. Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing • Purdue Owl • Who uses quotations? • Use quotations sparingly. You use a quotation when you want to highlight the words themselves. • Make sure that quotations flow with your text. • It might be helpful for you to use quotations when you are addressing contrary views. This way it becomes clear that you are not distorting your opponents’ arguments.

  6. Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing • Do not begin or end paragraphs with quotations. • Quotations should flow with your own text. • You should introduce quotations before the quotation marks and provide additional commentary in the sentence or sentences after the quotation marks.

Works Cited Pages Here are some guidelines: • Refer to the Purdue Owl’s guidelines for electronic sources • Your works cited page should be a separate page, and the words Works Cited should be centered on the top line • Alphabetize according to the first word in each entry • Typically the first word is the author’s last name. If there is no author, then the first word is the first word in the title that is not the, a, or an.

  8. Works Cited Pages • Put the title in quotation marks • Italicize the title of the web site • Do not include the URL • Use the word “web” to indicate the medium • Each entry should have a hanging indent
