  1. 1 Corinthians 13:5 “Love is not provoked, thinks no evil.” Properties of Love

  2. “Love is not provoked” • Definition. Greek word paroxuno (par-ox-oo'-no) is paroxysm (par-ox-siz-em), which is a term that describes a sudden attack, a violent outburst, or an intense convulsion. • See 2 Corinthians 12:20

  3. “Love is not provoked” • Exception. • “Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols” (Acts 17:16).

  4. “Love is not provoked” • Negative Example. • “Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark.38 But Paul insisted that they should not take with them … 39 Then the contention became sosharpthat they parted from one another. And so Barnabas took Mark & sailed to Cyprus” (Acts 15:37-39).

  5. “Love is not provoked” • Positive Example. • Jesus’ response to men’s attacks was uncharacteristic of most men (1 Pet 2:19-24).

  6. “Love takes no record of wrongs” • Definition. • The word “thinks” is logizomai (log-id'-zom-ahee); to take an inventory, i.e. estimate. The phrase literally means, “Love keeps no record of wrongs” (NIV). “Love does not take into account a wrong suffered” (NASU).

  7. “Love takes no record of wrongs” • Model—God’s Accounting. • “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, & whose sins are covered; 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall notimputesin” [whose sin the Lord will never count against him] (Rom 4:7-8; cf. 2 Cor 5:18-19).

  8. “Love takes no record of wrongs” • Model—God’s Accounting. • “But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, 6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputesrighteousness apart from works” (Rom 4:5-6 ).

  9. “Love takes no record of wrongs” • This is not to say that we cannot fall from the state of righteousness, or fall from God’s grace through disobedience (Gal 5:4; 2 Pet 2:20-22).

  10. “Love takes no record of wrongs” • Model—God’s Accounting. • “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? … 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness(Jas 2:21, 23).

  11. “Love takes no record of wrongs” • Following God’s Example. • “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you”(Eph 4:32). • “Bearing with one another, & forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you so you must also do” (Col 3:13).

  12. How has God forgiven us? He completely removed our offenses from His mind (Heb 8:12).

  13. Properties of Love Love is not provoked, not easily angered. Love thinks no evil; it takes no record of wrong.

  14. Forgiveness of Sin: Salvation! • Faith in Jesus Christ through the Gospel John 8:24; 20:30-31; Rom 1:16; 10:9-10; Mark 16:16; Heb 11:6 • Repent or turn from sins Luke 24:46-47; Acts 2:38; 3:19; 17:30-31 • Confess faith in Christ Matt 10:32-33; Acts 8:36-38; Rom 10:9-10 • Be baptized (immersed) in water Matt 28:19; Mk 16:16; Acts 2:38; Rom 6:3-4; 1 Pet 3:21 • Live in obedient faith Heb 5:8-9; 1 Peter 1:14; Rev 2:10
