  1. Properties of Love 1 Corinthians 13:5 “Love does not behave rudely”

  2. “Love does not behave rudely” • To be (act) unbecoming; to behave improperly toward someone (cf. 1 Cor 7:36). • The Latin rudis: rough, raw, wild, & untilled. • Paying little attention to decorum (what is proper in manners & conduct).

  3. “Love does not behave rudely” • The church at Corinth: • Demanding justice (6:1-8). • Shaming the poor (11:17-22). • Contentious & causing division (1:11; 3:3-4).

  4. “Love does not behave rudely” • “Too blunt”!” • “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one” (Col 4:6; Eph 4:29). • “That which bestows or occasions pleasure, delight, or causes favorable regard” (Vine). • Is it pure? Will it edify? Can I say it with grace?

  5. “Love does not behave rudely” • Genetic or Environment? • Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, & be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (1 Pet 5:5). • Learned at home, in the family environment. • Rudeness & Submission are incompatible.

  6. “Love does not behave rudely” • A humble (sinful) woman & a rude man (Luke 7:36-48). • She loved much – • Much forgiveness given to her. • He loved little – • Little desire to forgive others. • Little forgiveness given to him.

  7. Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion[suffering or feeling the like with another] for one another; • love as brothers, be tenderhearted [understanding the suffering of others & wanting to do something about it], • be courteous [humble minded] (1 Pet 3:8). “Love does not behave rudely” “Love is polite & courteous.”“Love minds its manners & behaves graciously toward others.”
