  1. Properties of Matter Mrs. Garner’s 5th Grade Science Class

  2. Atoms • Atoms are the smallest part of an element; the building blocks of matter.

  3. Matter • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

  4. Molecules • Molecules are particles that are made up of two or more atoms of the same or different elements.

  5. States of Matter • The three typical forms of matter are: solids, liquids, and gases; the states of water are: ice (solid), liquid water, and vapor (steam)

  6. Defining the States of Matter: Solids, Liquids, and Gases • Solids- state of matter with a definite shape and volume • Liquids- state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape; Liquids take the shape of their container! • Gases- state of matter with no definite volume or shape; examples: water vapor; steam • Evaporate: the changing of a liquid to a gas

  7. States of water can change when a change of temperature is involved. Increasethe Temperature--- solid to a liquid & liquid to a gas Decreasethe Temperature---- gas to a liquid & liquid to a solid

  8. Properties of Matter • Color, size, shape, and the texture (the way it feels) are the properties or characteristics of matter.

  9. Physical Properties of a Substance • ** Color • ** Luster (shine) • **Shape • **Density (Mass) • ** Texture (how it feels)

  10. Microscopes and Hand Lenses • Sometimes matter is too small to be seen without magnification.

  11. Mass • the amount of matter in an object • how heavy something is without gravity • measured in grams

  12. Weight • Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on an object.

  13. Comparing Mass & Weight Mass Weight - the measure of the pull of gravity on an object • -the measure of the amount of matter in an object

  14. Volume • Volume is the amount of space that matter takes up.

  15. Chemistry • -the science that deals with the characteristics of elements, the changes that take place to form substances, and the laws of their behavior

  16. Matter Can Undergo Two Different Types of Changes Physical Change Chemical Change

  17. Physical Change • -the shape or form of a substance becomes different, but the properties of the substance stays the same; it’s a change in the size, shape, or state of matter that does NOT CREATE A NEW KIND OF MATTER; • -Example- changing water into ice, or ice melting into water, water boiling into a vapor

  18. Chemical Change • -a change in matter that produces new kinds of matter with different properties; atoms are arranged into new molecules • -Examples- Burning, rusting, explosions, acid

  19. Chemical Reaction • A chemical reaction happens when two or molecules interact and something happens or changes.

  20. Clues That a Chemical Change Has Taken Place : • Change in : color, temperature, odor • Bubbles or Fizzing • Burning or Rusting

  21. Measurement • Measurement is finding a number that shows the size or amount of something. • There are two main “Systems of Measurement”: Metric and US Standard.

  22. Metric System • The metric system is a system measurement that uses multiples of 10. • Length: 1 cm= 10 mm, 1 m= 100 cm, 1 km= 1,000 m • Volume: 1 L= 1,000 mL • Mass: 1 kg = 1,000 g
