  1. A SPREADSHEET: • is an electronic version of a ledger. • consists of a grid with columns and rows. • is a computation tool. • can accurately compute mathematical formulas. • helps organize, display and manage information. • has the ability to create charts and graphs. • can be used to create tables.

  2. DEFINITIONS: • COLUMNS – represented by letters; vertical location • ROWS – represented by numbers; horizontal location

  3. CELL – intersection of a row and a column. ACTIVE CELL – the cell that is highlighted; the cell that you are actively working on. CELL ADDRESS – the location of the cell. For example: cell B14 or cell H78 DEFINITIONS:

  4. DEFINITIONS: • FORMULA BAR – located above the column letters; • it has fx on it • This is where you correct all your errors in the cells.

  5. FILL HANDLE • Located in the lower right-hand corner of a cell; • It appears as a small black box; • Drag it down and it will repeat whatever you have in the cell or it will also update any formulas that are there.

  6. 3 THINGS THAT CAN GO INTO A CELL: • TEXT – • NUMERIC – • FORMULAS – mathematical equations • FOUR OPERATORS FOR FORMULAS: • + addition • - subtraction • / division • * multiplication

  7. FORMULAS • Start with an equal sign. • Always have cell locations in it – not values.

  8. 3 TYPES OF DATA IN CELLS: 1.) LABEL – anything that is just text. Example: Title or items 2.) CONSTANT – any number Example: 8 or 3.14 or -59.7 3.) FORMULA – math equation Example: = B4 * J10 or = A23/3

  9. LABELS 1.) Help us identify what the numbers stand for. 2.) They help us understand the spreadsheet. 3.) They have no numerical value.

  10. CONSTANTS 1.) Constants are used to enter FIXED number data. 2.) Constants can be any kind of specific number: currency (money), percent, decimal, etc.

  11. FORMULAS 1.) Formulas are equations that performs calculations. 2.) A formula will be displayed on the screen as a number/answer, but the formula bar will show the formula.
