  2. Intro (4-9) • Native Americans had oral literature (passed down stories by word of mouth)

  3. Intro Continued (4-9) • Puritans -established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1620 -the government was a theocracy (based on God) -they wanted to reform the church from within • Pilgrims/Separatists -established the Plymouth Colony in 1620 -withdrew completely from the church

  4. Native Americans • Myths- traditional stories, often about immortal beings, that ware passed down from generation to generation • Origin Myths- stories that tell the origins of earthly life • Tribes -Onondaga, lived in Central New York, stories- The Earth on Turtle’s Back - Modoc, lived in Oregon and Northern California, stories- When Grizzlies Walked Upright - Navajo, lived in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, stories- The Navajo Origin Legend -Iroquois, lived in North Eastern U.S., stories- from The Iroquois Constitution

Christopher Columbus • Studied mapmaking and navigation • Goal was to reach Asia from sailing around the world (he died thinking that he did) • Queen Elizabeth of Spain sponsored him • Agreement- he got 10% of the riches from the new land and he would be able to rule the new land • Wrote Journal of the First Voyage to America • Reason for Queen Elisabeth to keep on funding him

  6. J ohn Smith (66-70) • He learned from experience • Led the first English colony in North America -Jamestown Colony -president for one year -didn’t respect the Native Americans • Wrote The General History of Virginia -to convince people to move to Virginia -hard to understand

  7. William Bradford • Studied mapping and navigation • Help found the Plymouth Colony -governor for 31 years • Wrote Of Plymouth Plantation -writes in Puritan Plan Style -friendly with the Native Americans -very religious

Olaudah Equiano (42-47) • Prince in his African village • He wrote, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano - horrible traveling conditions for slaves included: didn’t see daylight for a long time, in chains, just kept healthy enough for them to survive. - wrote it in big words to try and show that just because he was black he wasn’t stupid.

Anne Bradstreet • Wrote a love poem to her husband - “To My Dear and Loving Husband” -published in 1650 - used aa,bb,cc,dd,ee,ff rhyme scheme Poetry shows the Puritan way of explaining stories and the voice of the bible. Her love to write poems was frowned upon by the Puritan people and considered, “ unladylike”

  11. Edward Taylor • Wrote poem to God - “Huswifery” - was published in the 1930s after his poems were found -showed his love for God and how he wanted to prove his faith in God
