Native Americans cont. • Modoc • Lived in what is now Oregon and Northern California • Under the leadership of a sub chief known as Captain Jack • Iroquois • Lived in what is now North Eastern United States • Dekanawidah was an Iroquoian mystic and prophet • Led to formation of the Iroquois Confederation (Mohawk, Oneida, Seneca, Cayuga, and Onondaga)

  5. Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) • One of history’s most famous explorers • Got his funding from Queen Isabella from Spain • Set sail on August 3rd 1492 • Reached one of the Bahama Islands on October 12th • Over the next 12 years, he made 3 more transatlantic voyages

John Smith (1580-1631) • The General History of Virginia • Adventurer, poet, mapmaker and egotist • Earned a reputation of one of England's most famous explorers • Helped lead the first successful English colony into America • 10 years as a soldier • Landed in Virginia in 1607 • Founded Jamestown

  7. John Smith cont. • President of a colony from 1608-1609 • Helped to attain food, enforce discipline, and deal with the local Native Americans • Returned to England in 1609

  8. William Bradford (1590-1657) • He had endurance, intelligence and courage • Helped lead the Pilgrims to what is now Massachusetts • Elected governor after the first leader’s death • Re-elected 30 times • Organized the repayment of debts to financial backers • Encouraged new immigration

  11. Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672) • Poet • Un-ladylike • Wrote about her husband • Bad • Massachusetts Bay Colony • Expressed her feelings about Puritan life • “To My Dear and Loving Husband”

  12. Edward Taylor (1642-1729) • Teacher in England • Arrived in Boston in 1668 • Entered Harvard college, graduated in 1671 • Minister in Westfield, Massachusetts • Regarded as the best of the colonial poets • Didn’t want to be known • Poems were published after his death

  13. Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) • Puritan preacher • Entered Yale at age 13 • Graduated 4 years later as valedictorian • Began preaching in 1747 • Pastor in Northampton, Massachusetts • Became a leader of the Great Awakening • Religious revival in the 1730s and 1740s
