We explored two imaginary boxers (Mr Proud and Mr Humble) and how even though Mr Humble might look weaker, he has the greater strength. The children also had the chance to talk about pride as a positive and negative concept after considering a story from the bible about Naaman, the proud commander of an army who refused to wash in the Jordan river to heal his skin disease. Martin Smith, Headteacher Following on from last year’s entrance hall piece on values, we are delighted to welcome back Stu Mclellanwho is once again working with well over 100 children to produce a wonderful new mural that will brighten up the playground. Stu worked with the children to gather their ideas and plan a design which hopefully reflects features of the local area such as class houses, the grand union canal and local flora and fauna. Once the art is fully completed, it will be covered with a UV varnish and panelled along the white sections of classrooms facing the playground. A big thank you to Travis Perkins building merchants who donated nearly £400 worth of wood for free, thereby helping to reduce project costs. New Mural Thank you school council A big thank you to the school council who have helped with ideas for the 50th celebrations, talked about boys writing, planned anti-bullying week and chosen the award they would like the school to work towards amongst many other smaller discussions. Being at the mid-point in the year, we will have new school council elections in the coming week so as many children as possible can have an opportunity to do this role from reception to year 6. Local Artist working with children | Stu McLellan Sports Relief Friday 21st March is official sports relief day. We have a strong record of supporting fund-raising events. This year we will be supporting the cause through selling wrist bands (see picture right) for £1. If you would like your child to have a wrist band, the year 6s will be selling them at break and lunchtime on the day. All money raised will go straight to the charity. I have a waiting list of events the children would like to organise to help future charities and it is encouraging to see the children really warming to the idea of helping others and showing their values. 2. Stars ofthe week Circus Skills Day The children in Key Stage one really enjoyed their circus skills day. The day involved balancing, spinning, juggling and strong levels of concentration. This was all achieved with enormous levels of teamwork, perseverance and encouragement. Julian, the course facilitator, commented on how exceptionally well behaved the children were and how he enjoyed our values ethos. If you feel it is a role you would like to be involved in then please contact the school office. Jean Garner, our Chair of Governors writes: School Trips Mrs Haswell is fast becoming a favourite with her class! Earlier this month, the Year 1 class had a fabulous day in which all the children in her class dressed up as their favourite character. Following this, they were joined by Y2 in a fantastic outing to the Roald Dahl Museum making the work of one of the world’s favourite children's author a vibrant and engaging experience. Being a school governor is stimulating, enjoyable and rewarding. Did you know that school governors represent the largest volunteer force in the country? Governors are people who have an interest in the role of schools in society and wish to make a positivecontribution to their communities. They will have enquiring minds and contribute to the effective day-to-day running of the school and the educational achievements of its pupils. A governing body’s overriding responsibility is to work in partnership with the head teacher to promote continuous improvement in the performance of the school. This involves the establishment of a development plan, the setting of challenging but achievable targets and the interpretation of information to assess progress and determine appropriate action. Aligned to its improvement role, the governing body is there to be a “critical friend” who can provide the right balance between supporting and challenging the performance of both the head teacher and the school. Well done to everyone!
