Overview Passenger traffic down approximately40K from 2006 numbers • Revenues down approximately 1/2M dollars • Cargo up by 1% • Higher than normal operating expenses, loss of flights due to hard winter • 2008 looking much better
Why Air Cargo? • Instability of passenger airline industry • Limited Cdn airline selection for route development • Need for a more stable revenue stream Air cargo forecast to average of 6.1% next two decades, tripling current levels • GMIA second busiest air cargo a/p in Atlantic Canada • 100 cargo flts weekly All elements to become the “Center of Logistical Excellence” in Atlantic Canada in place First point of entry on Great Circle route between Europe and continental NA • 50% of all seafood Cdn exports are from Atlantic Canada • Atlantic Canada product currently being shipped from Boston, Montreal, New York, Toronto and Chicago airports
The Challenges(The only thing more difficult than bringing a new idea in, is getting an old one out) Providing a reliable logistics chain to/ from Europe with competitive pricing for our producers and shippers • Overcoming a 40-50 year old paradigm • Aligning with a reputable all cargo airline Working together with partners in the area that have traditionally seen each other as “the competition” • Customs availability • An overpass to Highway 15 • Runway extension • Rising fuel prices Overcoming the myth that there is only one major airport in Atlantic Canada
What’s Happening Fight for adequate customs service continues Transhipment status applied for and granted • Canada East Air Cargo Gateway Group • working to bring partners together working to identify cargo opportunities for the GMIA • Trade mission to India • Southern NB Gateway Council formed • Exploring two cargo opportunities Working with NBDOT & other gov’t departments • Identifying logistical partners in the region • Air cargo study underway
The Future • “Land” a regularly scheduled transatlantic air cargo flight Convince Atlantic Canada producers & shippers Leverage success to attract additional flights & cargo companies Construct overpass to access a/p and DIP lands within 2-3 years • Lengthen runway 06/24 within 3-5 years Work with EDCCD and City of Moncton to develop plan to provide easy connectivity to industrial parks (5-10 years)
Conclusion • 2007 bad, 2008 good Passenger airline industry to remain unstable from a revenue perspective for some time to come • Air cargo predicted to grow The GMIA ideally located, and region equipped to become “Logistical Center of Excellence” Challenges remain; biggest is to overcome the existing paradigm concerning shipping through out of region airports Several “irons in the fire” on the cargo front Working in partnership, air cargo will grow
