Understanding Speed and Velocity: A Physics Module on Movement and Change

This module explores the concepts of speed and velocity in physics. Speed is defined as the distance traveled in a certain time, expressed as s = d/t, with distance in meters and time in seconds. It is important to note that speed does not provide information about direction and is often considered an average value. The module includes practical exercises, like plotting a journey on a distance-time graph, making calculations using the gradient method, and distinguishing between speed and velocity. Students learn to apply these concepts and their significance in physics.

  1. MOVEMENT AND CHANGE - a PHYSICS module

  2. SPEED

  3. SPEED • Defined as – • distance travelled in a certain time • s = d / t • Distance usually measured in metres; time in seconds; speed in metres per second

  4. SPEED • m / s • or in science more usually expressed as • m s-1

  5. SPEED • Tells us nothing about the direction travelled in • Is usually an “average” value (unless measured and recorded every second!)

  6. A journey – as a table

  7. A Journey • Present this journey as a distance time graph • Q1 What assumptions have you made in plotting this graph? • Q2 Describe the journey depicted on the graph with explanations of what happened in each part.

  8. A Journey • Q4 Use the gradient method to calculate the speed from 22 minutes to 25 minutes. • Q5 Use the gradient method to calculate the speed from 10 minutes until 16 minutes.

  9. Speed vs Velocity • Read p125 of the PHYSICS text. • Write a note to define and explain what VELOCITY is and how it has a different meaning to speed.
