Summary and Implications • Many issues need work but clear priorities emerge. • The top opportunities overall, based on high degree of work to be done and high engagement potential are: • Environmental protection • Alcohol & drug abuse • School improvement • Afterschool and mentoring programs • For each of these issues: • At least one-third of Metro Atlantans think “a lot” of work needs to be done in their community. • Some counties are more in need than others. • At least two out of five think individuals can have “a lot” of impact. • At least one out of two Metro Atlantans feel that each issue needs “a lot” of work in the greater Atlanta region. Summary and Implications • A community with the will to change but not fully mobilized. • Strong conviction that Atlanta is headed in the right direction. • Over one-third of Metro Atlantans say they currently volunteer and another one-third indicate they are likely to get involved in one or more issues in the future. • In particular, for each of the high opportunity issues, at least six out of ten Metro Atlantans have either been personally involved or indicate an intention to get involved in the future. • In general: • African-Americans, Middle-Aged Adults, and those with HHI $50K+ are currently involved in these issues more than other groups. • Younger, lower-income, African American, Hispanics and Asians have the highest intent to get involved in these issues in the future. Setting Priorities For Civic Engagement • The chart on the next page depicts relative opportunities and challenges by examining the amount of work needed to be done relative to whether the Leadership believes individuals should be involved (Engagement Potential). • This analysis indicates that, overall, the top opportunities, based on high degree of work to be done and high engagement potential are: • Alcohol & drug abuse • School improvement • Afterschool & mentoring programs • All three top opportunities among the Leadership match those evident among the General Public.
