Training a group of pupils as ‘interpreters’ using the ‘Hampshire Young Interpreter pack’ Valuing this group by giving them an official role and status within the school Through this group, providing additional peer support to newly arrived EAL learners either through first language or child friendly English Working with this group to listen and respond to the needs of pupils, parents and visitors with EAL on a day to day basis Communicating and celebrating the group’s work with parents and carers Adding to and extending the buddy system for new arrivals, not replacing it Sending positive messages to all about valuing bilingualism The Hampshire Young Interpreter Scheme involves…

  6. How does it work? Member of staff appointed as co-ordinator Pupils invited to become school interpreters based on language skills and or other qualities Parents informed about the scheme Pupil interpreters help to train other pupils Co-ordinator delivers short training course using ‘Young interpreter pack’ Co-ordinator meets with pupils regularly for feedback and support Pupils support new arrivals in a variety of ways* Pupils awarded interpreter badge and kit at celebration assembly Parents contacted and or invited

Benefits • Helps pupils to develop empathy towards the challenges and difficulties of being a new arrival • Supports school staff at different points through the school day (teachers, teaching assistants, office staff, lunchtime staff) • Reassures parents/carers • New arrivals have more extensive, focussed peer support in addition to buddies • Pupil interpreters use their bilingual skills and develop further communication strategies to clarify, explain and ‘interpret’ for new entrants through either first language or child –friendly English

  9. I can speak in English to my friends and teachers at school. I have forgotten how to write some words in German. My languages German and English When we go to Germany, I teach my friends the English that I have learnt. I like teaching my friends at school some German words but they find it difficult to learn. I write in English most of the time. I am good at writing in English. I help my mum and dad to write and speak in English. I visit my friends and family in Germany once a year. I listen to German music at home with my sister. I speak German at home with my family. situation: There is a student in your tutor group who has only been in the UK for a few months. She/He is finding it very hard to speak English. You can’t speak the same language as this student, nor can anyone else in your tutor group. You want to help him/her. How could you help this student? What language/vocabulary would you need?
