New Federal Safe Routes to School Program: Enhancing Student Transportation Safety

The New Federal Safe Routes to School Program, established under Section 1404 of the SAFETEA-LU Transportation Reauthorization Bill, introduces a $612 million federally-assisted initiative to promote safer school travel nationwide over the next five years. The program mandates the implementation of Safe Routes to School (SRTS) initiatives across all 51 Department of Transportation (DOT) offices, the creation of a centralized Clearinghouse for resources, and the establishment of a dedicated Task Force. Its primary goal is to enable and encourage safe walking and biking for students.
