Basics • Population of 5.4 million. • Area: 49,034 sq km(UK: 244, 820 sq km) • Slovakia borders with Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland providing a market of 67m people. • Add her Eastern neighbour, Ukraine, and you have a further 46m people. • The capital city is Bratislava (population of 430,000) • Bratislava is only 65 km/40 miles/ from Vienna

UK - Slovak Business Relations • UK is the 12th largest investor in Slovakia (EUR 401 million). • BUT! • Many British investors in Slovakia invest via their subsidiaries in the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg or other countries and they are therefore not officially counted as the British investment. • The largest British investor Tesco itselfisreported to haveinvested over £900 million in Slovakia. • The British Embassy has registered over 100 companies in Slovakia with UK ownership.

Security Current Situation & What to Expect: • New government formed in July 2010 • State Budget for 2011 was announced only in October 2010 • Cuts around 10% in some Security budgets • No detailed plans announced yet – next year plan still unclear • Many previous projects on hold – being reassessed • Some Priorities in the Home Affairs: • Fighting Corruption • Fighting Organised Crime • Better equipment for police; new firearms • Better equipment for fire brigades • Interior Ministry to cut spending on civil servants, not on security • Customs Administration to cut 19% of staff (850 officers)

Projects: Firefighter and Rescue Team • In 2009 Firefighter and Rescue Team of the Interior Ministry approved 25 projects worth € 15.9 million (mostly reconstruction and modernisation of the fire stations) • Firefighter corps spent € 40 million on new technology (ladder trucks, pumper trucks, tanker trucks) last year. • Integrated Rescue System to be upgraded in the future ICT and Security Section of the Interior Ministry • 6 projects approved last year worth € 124.3 million; plus two additional projects submitted by the HR department worth € 2.8 million • Public sector administration – number of EU funded ICT projects • New chip car registration cards as of June 2010; electronic driving licence, ID card (end of2011) and biometric passports • New electronic ID will be used for authentication in the eGovernment

Projects 2: Schengen border • Slovak-Ukrainian border (98km long) – 12 km of dual detection system SENSTAR (electromagnetic) was built last year. 3km radio barriers (seismic); 2.7km ‘virtual fence’ RALEN • Border check points and airports: document examination systems VSC-4 (UK?); retro-checks and microscopes; new detectors to detect people in trucks • Plans: continue with building of the dual detection system SENSTAR; 5km of the ‘virtual fence’ RALEN • Visas: National visa IT system ready to be connected to other Member States via the Schengen consultation network VISION Police & Rescue • Interior Ministry Priorities for 2011: • re-arm the police (24,000 guns and 10,000 assault rifles) • improve their ballistic protection equipment and training • upgrade the functionality of the integrated rescue system.
