  1. The Role of the ELL Coordinator Dani Butler Westminster Christian Academy Saint Louis, Missouri dbutler@wcastl.org Christina Shim Wheaton Academy West Chicago, Illinois cshim@wheatonacademy.org

  2. Overview of Program & Roles: Westminster & Wheaton

  3. Wheaton Academy • The mission of Wheaton Academy is to nurture growth in our students through relationships, excellence and service to the glory of God.

  4. Philosophy & Structure (WA) We follow an immersion and self-contained ELL model. All international students take English class. All first year students and continuing students who need the support take an English Lab class that helps build foundational reading, writing, listening/speaking, vocabulary and grammar English skills.

  5. Training Teachers/ Teacher Collaboration (WA) • WA has department collaboration meetings each week. The ELL Coordinator sits in on the English Department meetings and serves as support for the teachers. • The ELL Coordinator also connects with department liaisons from each department at various points in the year.

  6. WA • I have found the primary role of the ELL Coordinator is positioning oneself to be available to administrators, teachers, and students in order to allow the immersion model to work.

  7. Westminster 1. Examples of how to collaborate between ESL teachers and faculty members 2. Essential writing terms for ESL 3. General outline of ESL 5-paragraph essay writing 4. Examples of quiz modification 5. Examples of Current Event writing 6. Instructions for ESL research paper 7. Self-Assessment steps 8. Common ESL problems in grammar 9. TOEFL Test Q & A

  8. Tutoring & Study Skills (WA) • All first year students are offered 2 hours/week of one-one tutoring after-school. • A big challenge for our international students once they arrive is learning how to manage their time and develop intrinsically motivated study skills.
