  5. Music Cultures and Instrumental Timbres • In Mesopotamia, an ancient land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, archaeologists found rattles, flutes, and harp-like instruments dated back to 2000 B.C.

  6. Culture • Many cultures still have music that is unwritten. Certain people have taken responsibility to collect information about these cultures. • Anthropologists-scholars who study physical and culture characteristics as well as social customs of a group of people. • Ethnomusicologists-scholars who study the music of a group of people.

  7. Definitions of culture • Culture-the customs, beliefs, language, arts and institutions of a group of people that are learned and transmitted within the group. • Music Culture-performance practices, means, traditions, uses, and beliefs about music of a group of people, either from a time or place

  8. Elements of Music • Melody –succession of musical tones • Rhythm-way the beats or pulses are organized and subdivided • Timbre-Tone color • Pitch-highest or lowest of a sound determined by vibration

  9. Identifying Instrument Timbres Aerophones Instruments that produce sound by a vibrating column of air. This can be pipe made out of wood, plastic, or metal. Ex: flutes, oboes, trombones, bagpipes

  10. Identifying Instrumental Timbres Idiophones • Simple, solid instruments that produce sound by being struck, scraped, or shaken. This group includes gongs, cymbals, rattles, and xylophones Vietnamese dan t’rung
