  3. Introduction Ireland is a small island off the northwest coast of Great Britain, which is divided from Scotland by a narrow strait of water. Irish people actually are the descendants of Celts, because it is believed that the Celtic invaders may have come to Ireland in the 6th century BC. Ireland has a history of more than 5,000 years. Its landscapes are very fascinating and attractive. Although it has its own language—Gaelic, it is the only English-speaking country in Europe apart from the UK. BACK

  4. Geography In size, the area of the Republic of Ireland is slightly smaller than Chongqing and bigger than the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region(宁夏回族自治区). Ireland id not very hot during summer, nor very cold in winter. Under the influence of the Gulf Stream and prevailing winds from the southwest, it has a quite temperate climate. Seen from the air, the visitor’s first impression is intense green. Ireland is almost always damp, so it may be uninhabitable, but it is perfect for domestic animals and for growing grass. It is the largest producer of lead and zinc in Europe. It has a population of 4,203,200人(in 2009). Back

  5. Politics Most of Ireland’s offices are filled through election by the Irish people. The Irish Republic has a Prime Minister or Taoiseach(总理) and a Deputy Prime Minister who appoints a cabinet. The President is elected by the direct vote of the people. The President’s term of office is 7 years and a President can be reelected once only. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President on the nomination of the Parliament. The sole power of making laws for the state is vested(被赋予) in the Irish Parliament which is composed of two houses : the Dail(下议院) and the Senate(上议院). The government is responsible to the Dail alone.BACK
