  4. Break it Down Now Our 6 Guidelines • Grade book reflects only standards • No extra credit • Homework is a chance to practice and demonstrate attainment prior to assessment.   5. Grading Scale We chose a 4 pt. scale • 4, 3.5, 3, 2, 1 • Refer to my syllabus sample to see % breakdown and meaning for each point value • Ask your students what they think each level represents when talking about a new project/lab • Defining Mastery

  6. Here’s some more! Power Standards (PS) • Check with AEA about setting up your POS standards and benchmarks. • Look at Iowa Core Syllabus and parent letter • Include your PS, homework and re-assessment policies • Attached to presentation

Making the Grade Gradebook • Look at the system you have and figure out what works best for your recording of homework, tests and projects. • Even if something is not included in the final grade, it should be documented for parents and students to see. • Are you able to enter comments? • Talk with your PLC and building about what they are trying and share success and failures.

  9. Examples of work • Financial Literacy • Sewing projects • What do you want to see on a high quality product? • Cooking food labs • Refer to my attached notes to look at my rubrics based on the job each student is assigned. They must rotate jobs in order to be graded on all four areas.

  10. So what happened? • The Good:I’ m getting to the heart of what I want to teach. Time wasting activities are gone and assignments/projects are more meaningful. Students are seeing that I care about their learning. I used my PLC to bounce ideas and to have a new set of eyes looking at my curriculum. • The Bad: Maybe we needed more time to prepare staff and community before hopping in. In reviewing surveys,students and parents would like our task force to consider other grading scales and to have homework count for a small percentage of the grade. • The Rainbow: The students are more willing to take risks if there is an option to reassess. Grades reflect an honest score. Me- more time spent of giving feedback but I feel like my students are accountable for their learning.
