Hues in high values are cheering
Catches attention • Attention can guided by choice and organization of colours • Warm hue attract more notice than cool • Black & Yellow is the most legible combination at a distance • The more intense the colour ; the more the pulling power
Influences size • Painting the walls of a room in light, neutral, cool colours makes it seem more spacious. • Clothes of cool hues, low values and low intensities – with minimum contrast of any kind tend to make overweight persons look smaller. • Warm hues, higher values, higher intensities and noticeable contrast can make an underweight person seem heavier • In general, warm hues, high values and strong intensities increase apparent size.
Affects outlines • Warm hues soften outlines slightly more than do cool hues. • Contrasting hues makes outlines clearer than do related hues • Value, contrasts emphasize outlines
Influences distance • Apparent distance is drastically affected by colour • In a view that includes distant as well as nearby trees • Warm hues tend to make objects look closer than cool colours do

Colour 1 • Colour attracts attention, adds dynamism, creates mood and has its own set of meanings (semiotics) • Even monochromatic or black & white images have specific connotations & meanings
Complementary coloursare dynamic and full of movement – good for logos, interior design • Contrasting coloursgive emphasis & have high impact • Harmonious colours[also called ‘analogous’] can create a serene, warm, peaceful or romantic mood

What mood do they suggest? • Colour psychology can be applied to branding, packaging, web design, animation, film prodn. advertising, interiors, product design and uniforms, as well as personal application to your home • red = ? • yellow = ? • white = ? • black = ? • green = ? Note: the meaning of a colour may change in different cultures. Can you think of any examples?
Preparation • In your sketchbook choose a colour scheme – either complementary, analogous/ harmonious, contrasting or monochromatic • Create sample colour triangles for each colour to see how shades work together
Red • Associated with Danger, adventure, optimism, passion, courage, energy, sex, attraction and magnetism, sensuality, the opposite sex, forcefulness, self assertion, love, physical vitality, warmth, action (think of fire).
Red - The psychology • Red is a powerful colour that has always been associated with vitality and ambition. • It can help overcome negative thoughts. • However, it is also associated with anger • If we have too much red in our system, or around us, we may feel irritable, impatient, and uncomfortable.
Pink • Associated with: Love, fresh, distinctly feminine, affection and romantic love, compassion, friendship, benevolent forces, understanding, diplomacy, purity.
Orange • Associated with: Stability, reassurance, sunset, autumn leaves, energy, attraction, self-control, organisation, self esteem, warmth, adaptability, vitality, joy, kindness, alertness, creativity, harvest, maturity (think of the harvest sun and moon)
Orange - Psychology • Orange is a joyous colour. • It frees and releases emotions and alleviates feelings of self-pity, lack of self-worth, and unwillingness to forgive. • It stimulates the mind, renewing interest in life. • It is a wonderful antidepressant and lifts the spirits. Apricot/peach is good for nervous exhaustion
Green • Associated with: Promotes feelings of well-being and harmony, nature, security, stability and balance. money, prosperity, healing, growth, employment, fertility, success, health, harmony, new beginnings, renewal (think of green plants)
Green - Psychology • Green has a strong affinity with nature, helping us connect with empathy to others and the natural world. • We instinctively seek it out when under stress or experiencing emotional trauma. • It creates a feeling of comfort, laziness and relaxation, calmness, and space, lessening stress, balancing and soothing the emotions. Dark green is helpful for emotional uncertainty.
Blue • Associated with: Soothing and calming, loyalty, serenity, authority, protection, contemplative, prevents nightmares, promotes intellectual thought and is believed to keep hunger at bay,healing, relaxation, peace, truth, wisdom, clarity of expression, meditation, harmony, calm, devotion, spiritual understanding, introspection (think of a clear blue sky or the ocean)
Blue - Psychology • Blue is a cool, calming colour and is associated with a higher part of the mind than yellow. • It represents the night, so it makes us feel calm and relaxed as if we are being soothed by the deep blue of the night sky. • Light and soft blue, make us feel quiet and protected from all the bustle and activity of the day, and alleviates insomnia. • Blue inspires mental control, clarity, and creativity. Midnight blue has a strong sedative effect on the mind, allowing us to connect to our intuitive and feminine side. • Too much dark blue can be depressing.
Yellow • Associated with: Sunshine and energy, creativity and stimulates the intellect.attraction and activity, communication, eloquence, intellect, confidence, travel, concentration, agility, inspiration, happiness, luck, optimism, faith, balance
Yellow - Psychology • Yellow is also a happy, bright, and uplifting colour, a celebration of sunny days. • It is associated with the intellectual side of the mind, and the expression of thoughts. • It therefore aids the powers of discernment and discrimination, memory and clear thinking, decision-making and good judgement. • It also helps good organization, assimilation of new ideas, and the ability to see different points of view. • It builds self-confidence and encourages an optimistic attitude. • Conversely, dull yellow can be the colour of fear.
Purple • Associated with: Magic, creativity, joy, fertility, sensuous, luxurious and sex. power, healing, combating disease and infections, spirituality, psychic healing, meditation, judgement, flamboyance, ceremony (think of royal purple)
Purple - Psychology • Indigo, violet and purple have a deep affect on the psyche and have been used in psychiatric care to help calm and pacify patients suffering from a number of mental and nervous disorders. • These colours balance the mind and also help transform obsessions and fears. • Indigo is a powerful, psychic colour associated with the right side of the brain, and stimulates intuition and imagination. • It is also a strong sedative. • Violet and purple are colours of transformation at a very deep level, bringing peace and combating shock or fear.
Purple - Psychology • They have a cleansing effect in emotional disturbances. • They are also connected with artistic and musical impulses, mystery, and sensitivity to beauty and high ideals, stimulating creativity, inspiration, sensitivity, spirituality, and compassion. • Violet can exert strong psychic influences, however, and a person attracted by it has to guard against living in a fantasy world. • Purple is associated with psychic protection.
Brown • Associated with: Secured, stable, and a very practical colour, earthy, grounding, steady, concentration, healing, cleansing, working with animals and the home, the feminine (think of the earth)
Brown - Psychology • The colour of Mother Earth, brown brings a sense of stability, alleviating insecurity. • However, it also relates to bottling up of emotion, a retreat from and a fear of the outside world, and also narrow-mindedness. • This often results from a lack of self-worth.
Grey • Associated with: Sophistication, neutrality, balance. • Associated with independence, self-reliance, self-control, grey acts as a shield from outside influence. • However, grey generally has a negative feeling - thick grey clouds, fog, and smoke. • Grey is the colour of evasion and non commitment since it is neither black nor white. • It relates to walling everything off, remaining separate, uncommitted, and uninvolved, inevitably leading to loneliness. • It also denotes self-criticism.
Black • Associated with Drama, death, eccentricity, banishing, absorbing negativity, exorcisms, and the presence of all colours. • It is a non-colour that absorbs colour and reflects nothing back.This colour is both comforting, protective, and mysterious. • It is associated with silence, the infinite, and the feminine life force - passive, uncharted, and mysterious. • Black can also prevent us from growing and changing. • We often cloak ourselves in black to hide from the world.
WHITE WHITE • Protection, purification, moon work, clarity of vision and insight, healing, pure focused energy, strengthens the powers of other colours, sincerity, calm, blessing, simplicity.
