Join us for the WisDOT Transportation Improvement Conference held on March 10, 2011, featuring updates on the new Preventive Maintenance (PM) Agreement and 3D technology initiatives in design and construction. Key improvements in the PM Agreement include clarifications for eligible work, identification of pavement treatment groups, and increased flexibility for safety considerations. Additionally, explore innovative Civil 3D and Building Information Modeling (BIM) practices, which enhance project efficiency and infrastructure preservation.

ACEC/WisDOT Transportation Improvement Conference WisDOT Updates March 10, 2011 Jerry Zogg, P. E. WisDOT – Bureau of Project Development
WisDOT Updates • Preventive Maintenance (PM) Agreement • 3D Technology Initiatives in: • Design • Construction
PM Agreement Current Status: • PM Agreement executed by WisDOT and FHWA in Nov 2010 • WisDOT published the new PM Agreement and FDM 3-1-5 in FDM Transmittal No. 379 on 12/21/10
PM Agreement Key Improvements: • Provides definition of a “pavement in good condition” to better clarify eligible work • Reformatted PM Agreement for easier use by creating table of eligible work and requirements.
PM Agreement Key Improvements (con’t): • Identifies 3 Groups of Pav’t Treatments • Provides proper balance between: • Engineering efforts • Safety requirements • Need to preserve infrastructure
PM Agreement Key Improvements (con’t): • Provides more flexibility to allow substandard roadside slopes to remain depending on crash history • Allows PM projects to continue if safety issues identified. Document safety issues and address with future programming
PM Agreement • Abbreviated DSR for some PM Projects • In-house Statewide Webinar on new PM Agreement on April 11
3D InitiativesDesign & Construction Today’s Topics: • Civil 3D Implementation • 2011Pilot Efforts on USH 10 • Use of WisDOT produced 3D Models • Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) for HMA Base Course • Building Information Model (BIM) Implementation in SE Region
Civil 3D Implementation • Began statewide implementation mid-July of 2010 • Currently have approx: • 130 staff statewide engaged in training • 15-20 projects underway • Have requested Regions to begin new projects with Civil 3D • Methods Staff: • Rick Larson • Brad Hollister • Eric Arneson • Lisa Herrmann
Pilot Efforts – USH 10 • Wis Rapids in-house staff wrapping up 4 major grading/base/paving projects in Civil 3D • 1st - 3D Models designed/produced in Civil 3D • Key PD staff: • Nick Voss • Kyle Harris • Kevin Garrigan • Jeff Stewart • Matt Bronson
Next Steps for 3D Models • Determine ultimate requirements for 3D Models • Feedback from USH 10 pilots very important • Set future dates for: • 3D models to be a required PSE deliverable • SunsettingCAiCE • Transitioning out of Microstation for Roadways
Next Steps for AMG • Finalize AMG spec for HMA base & incorporate into Std Specs • Begin efforts to prepare for the use of AMG for: • PCC pav’t & base • HMA pav’t • Above uses of AMG will require combination of • GPS • Laser to achieve vertical accuracy
BIM Implementation in SE • Static/Mobile LiDAR - Data Collection: Integrated Static/Mobile LiDAR Project-Zoo IC • BIM/CAD - Design/Construction: 3D-4D BIM Pilot Project-Mitchell IC Tunnels/Zoo IC • AMG Grading/GPS Rovers-Construction Inspection: I-94 North-South Project • BIM/GIS - Assets/Infrastructure Lifecycle: O&M-As-Builts, Planning-PIP, etc.
