  5. Ms. Kowalski’s Literacy Class My primary goal for this school year is to help your child find their niche in reading and writing. We will do this through creative projects and student led discoveries.   Goals

Reading: • Comp and Fluency Non-Fiction • Questioning- ask and answer to show understanding of text • Main Idea- find main idea, how do key details support the main idea • Use language that pertains to time, sequence and cause and effect • Determine word meaning- academic words • Text features- use text features to locate information • Cause and effect- use signal words(because, although, if, then) to identify cause and effect situations • Use illustrations to gain understanding • Compare and Contrast- two texts written on the same topic

Reading Cont.: Comp and Fluency Fiction • Questioning- ask and answer to show understanding of text • Retell stories to explain central message • Use signal words (next, before, after) when sequencing • Refer to specific sections of text by correct name (stanza, paragraph, scene) • Summarize important details • Inferences about character setting and plot (plays, poems, stories) • Describe characters- traits, feelings and motivation • Determine word meaning from context • Point of View- distinguish their point of view from authors • How illustrations enhance the story  • Compare and Contrast- stories by the same author or about the same character

Spelling • Weekly spelling list can be found at:  spellingcity.com • Weekly Pre and Post Assessments to guide instruction • Use grade level phonics to decode words • Common prefixes and suffixes • Decode multi syllable words • Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition • Determine meaning of multi-meaning words • Use context clues, antonyms or synonyms as clues, root words as clues, glossaries or dictionaries.  • Meaning of figurative language • Literal and nonliteral meanings of words • Real life connections with words

Math Goal: My goal is to enable your child to learn more mathematical content through real world application • 1st Quarter: Number Sense • Place value, properties of operation, rounding, relationship between addition and subtraction • 2nd Quarter: Computation/Fractions • Addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication within 100, relationship between division and multiplication, arithmetic patterns, fractions on a number line, equivalent fractions

  10. 3rd Quarter Fractions cont., Measurement, Geometric measurement: • Comparing fractions, time, plane figures, area, estimating volumes and masses • 4th Quarter: Graphing, Geometry, Probability: • Plot, bar, and picture graph, median, mode, range, shapes and their attributes
