April 24th……… through Daniel’s Educational Tours extended day (about 6:30 a.m. t0 6:30 p.m.) charter buses to Columbus, GA-National Infantry Museum (includes Imax Movie)- Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center-(includes Chick-fil-A picnic lunch) -Cost will be $80 per student ($45 deposit by November 29th and remaining $35 by February 3) -Informational letter will be sent home as an attachment to the weekly newsletter in mid-September, with the registration form coming home electronically on or around October 15th Spring Field Trip

  6. ELA Curriculum Common Core Standards in ELA: Reading, Writing, Language will be integrated in daily lessons. If your child is reading about a topic, they will be writing about the topic. • More open response on assessments and very few multiple choice questions • Level of rigor increased this year • Speaking & Listening Standards assessed each quarter

Reading Curriculum • Reading Assessments: Used to assess student comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary • Reading focus is on literary and informational texts • Students are required to read 20 minutes every night. Students are responsible for recording these minutes. Students will have in class projects each month based on the book they have read. Book genres may be assigned.

State Writing Assessment • We will help your child prepare by teaching them how to attack a prompt and how to manage the 2 hours allotted for the test by implementing practice situations in class. We will also grade their writing each quarter using the same rubric the state uses to assess student writing. These assessments will count as a summative grade each quarter. • Your child will receive either a narrative, informational, or persuasive writing prompt. They must write about the prompt they are given. These handout handed out at random. Teachers do not know the prompts before the test. • Students will do the following in a 2 hour period: • Attack the Prompt (10 minutes) • Prewrite/Brainstorm (15 minutes) • Write a rough draft (35 minutes) • Break • Edit (15 minutes) • Write final copy (35 minutes) • Revise (10 minutes)

  9. Language Curriculum • In the new CC standards the term Language = Grammar • Students are expected to apply Language skills correctly in all of their writing. These conventions will be assessed. • DGP (Daily Grammar Practice) • Parts of Speech • Sentence Structure/Type/Purpose • Capitalization & Punctuation • Sentence Diagramming

Curriculum • Math – CCGPS • Order of Operations and Whole Numbers • Place Value, Powers of 10, Addition and Subtraction of Decimals. • Multiplying and Dividing with Decimals (Double Digit Divisor) • Fractions (Unlike denominators) • Modeling Fractions and Decimals • Geometry and the Coordinate Plane • 2D Figures • Volume (Multiple Dimensions) • Measurement • Vocabulary • Daily Practice – Homework is Practice

  12. Specials Schedules Music, Art, PE twice a week and Connections Connections is a rotation between Technology, Media Center and Guidance

  13. Grading Policy Assessments: -There will be 4-6 summatives each quarter in ELA and math. -Re-tests will only be given in ELA and math on these summatives. There will be no re-tests in science or social studies. -Re-learn/re-test sessions will be held during lunch and/or recess.

  14. Re-Test Policy -All students will be given the option for a re-test. Students will be required to complete any teacher re-teach/re-learn options. -There is no maximum score a student may receive on a re-test. -Teachers may choose to revoke the opportunity for a re-test if the opportunity is abused.
