  1. National Healthcare Foundation Skills Assessment Michigan State Board of Education Meeting October 13, 2009

  2. Perkins IV Requirement • Student attainment of career and technical skill proficiencies, including student achievement on technical assessments, that are aligned with industry-recognized standards

  3. Assessment and AccountabilityAdvisory Group • Originally formed to provide input to OCTE to develop the Perkins State Plan • Will continue as an advisory group throughout the CTE assessment program

  4. Health Science Assessment • NCHSE was the advisory group used to develop the Health Career Cluster standards • National Healthcare Foundation Skills Assessment was developed in alignment with the standards

  5. Assessment Item: Academic Foundation 1.12 Recognize body planes, directional terms, quadrants, and cavities. If the body were cut in a transverse plane, what organs would be in the same half? • Spinal cord and occipital lobe of the brain • Heart and thyroid gland • Right ovary and right lung • Brain and bladder

  6. Assessment Item: Safety Practices 7.21 Apply personal safety procedures based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regulations. What book would include Material Safety Data Sheets? • Red Cross "Emergency Care and Safety" • "CDC Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards" • "Living and Driving Safely" by Mothers Against Drunk Driving • A hospital "Policies and Procedures Manual"

  7. Assessment Item: Legal Responsibilities 5.24 Understand informed consent. Which of these patients would require the consent of another person before a medical professional can provide treatment? • A married 18 year-old girl with an abscessed tooth • An adult patient who refuses to have x-rays taken • A boy on his middle school baseball team who twisted his ankle • An unconscious man who needs emergency surgery

  8. National Cut Scores • As with most occupational licensing and certification exams, a group of business and industry experts determines the necessary knowledge and skills needed for an entry level worker
