  1. Agreements That Work Missouri Western State University Susan Bracciano–Registrar braccian@missouriwestern.edu Cindy Heider-Academic Affairs heider@missouriwestern.edu Jim Hoffman, Admissions jhoffman4@missouriwestern.edu

  2. Background • 2006-2007 • Renewed focus on meeting regional educational needs • Focus on addressing transfer issues, both internally and externally • Focus on making information easily accessible to potential students • Focus on the individual needs of students

  3. Key Ingredients and Roles • Commitment, Communication and Clarity • Program Chairs and Faculty • Admissions • Registrar • Enrollment Development Committee • Institutional Leadership

  4. Four Major Agreements • Academic Cooperation Agreement • Principles of Articulation Agreement • Dual Admission Agreement • Reverse Transfer

  5. Academic Cooperation • Outlines the formal process – recitals, base agreement, addendums and defined terms • Built upon the future needs of students and our community rather than tradition or current popularity • Structure is to be dynamic, open to improvement and responsive to changing career trends.

  6. Principles of Articulation • Principle 1 - The institutions agree that students who choose to transfer from a community college, or between four year institutions to earn a bachelor’s degree, should be provided with a smooth curriculum transition that minimizes loss of credit and duplication of coursework. Therefore, the institutions agree to enter into a course-by-course and program to program articulation agreement for students who transfer. Both institutions enter into this agreement as cooperating and equal partners.

  7. Principle 2 • The institutions agree to communicate with each other and their common and respective publics concerning the established relationship between the two institutions. Faculty and staff at both institutions will share the information in this agreement with interested and qualified students and both institutions will provide advisement to students and prospective students. • Transfer policies have the commitment and active support of top administrators

  8. Principle 3 • At least one administrative or faculty member from each institution will be appointed to act as agents for the implementation of this agreement, to speak for the institutions, and to communicate changes to respective faculty members, advisors, counselors, and others to whom the information is pertinent. • Both parties agree to communicate annually any changes in their respective curriculum that may affect this program-to-program articulation agreement. Both parties will review the agreement for revision and possible renewal every three years. • This agreement is effective……… three to five years is a standard duration for the agreement.

  9. Dual Admission • Initiated to support smooth and seamless transitions for students • Encourages AA degree completion • Academic advising enhanced • Access to institutional events • Admission fee waived • http://www.missouriwestern.edu/admissions/dual.asp

  10. Reverse Transfer • Students may transfer credits for course work earned at MWSU for the purpose of completing requirements for an associate degree. • Student must have completed a minimum of 42 credit hours at 100 level or above at the two year institution to qualify for the reverse transfer agreement. • For students who have met the above requirement, the credit hours transferred would be treated as if they were hours earned at the two year institution. • Such ‘reverse transfer” authority is intended to allow the students who may transfer to prior to achieving their associate degree the advantage of completing such a degree pending their further efforts toward obtaining a baccalaureate degree.

  11. Reverse Transfer - continued • Such ‘reverse transfer’ authority is also intended to allow students who may, for various reasons, leave MWSU prior to completing their baccalaureate degree or are interested in completing the associate degree while attending MWSU the opportunity to apply the credits they have earned up to that point toward achieving an associate degree. • Each institution will communicate to students who qualify for dual admissions the benefits of completing an associate’s degree and the opportunities for reverse transfer. • MWSU will provide, at no cost to the student, an official transcript for students eligible for reverse transfer for the purpose of completing requirements for an associate degree.
